I feel stupid for asking this, but can they work together? I see a lot of "auto zoom" etc lenses in the bay and wonder if they can be used with my screwmount Fujica...

Nikon autofocus lenses are backwards compatible to most AI/AIS manual focus bodies. The Canon autofocus lenses aren't compatible either way with their manual FD gear. Don't know about the K mount Pentax gear for sure, but since they're forwards compatible they're probably backwards compatible... was their a system you were asking about in particular?

There's an adapter from Pentax to put M42 screw mount lenses on K-mount bodies but you can't go the other way and get infinity focus. That doesn't mean someone, somewhere hasn't machined up an adapter and tried it.

Be carefull with Nikon mount lenses and bodies! There are many variations with additional cams and although you can mount any lens on any body that does not mean that it works and that you don't break something.
A friend had a FM2 for years when he got a, then new, N80 just to find out that his lenses and flash won't work with the newer body. So he got a new zoom which won't work on the old body although the mount is the same.
Can't blame Canon for switching to a totaly different mount for AF cameras, it avoids confuson at least.

Oh, i'm sorry for not being clearer. I'm talking about M42/screwmounts in particular. I'm just wondering if all-manual M42 vintage cameras do ok matched up with newer M42 lenses that have AF or auto zoom.

I'd be really surprised to find that there was an autofocus lens built in the M42 screw mount. There are several in Pentax-K mount, of course.

I guess I'm confused...some ebay sellers don't really say what is auto in the "auto lens" they are selling.

I think the "auto" referrs to the automatic aperture on SLR lenses.
I've seen "auto"bellows for C/Y mount so normal open aperture metering is possible.

Hopefully this will make sense.
Many of the early M42 lenses were "preset" or manual lenses in that you had to stop the lens down manually before taking the pisture. Later "Auto" lenses had a pin in the back which was pressed by a plate in the bottom of the lens mount. This stopped the lens down automatically when the button was pressed but before the shutter was released. There were some variations on this. Some eary Pentax lenses were called Auto Takumars. The lens stopped down automatically but you had to manually reset them for full aperture viewing. Most re-opened automaticaly. The "Auto" lens mainly have an A/M switch on them. Most M42 lens will work with all the Fujicas. Howeve, it does depend a little on which Fuji you have. All but the earliest ones had a lens mount with screws in it. If you have one of these, you cannot use the later Pentax SMC Takumars as the full aperture pin will jam in the screws and you will not be able to release the lens. The Super Takumars are no problem. AFIK, the only problem with M42 lenses on the Fuji are those that are designed to give full aperture metering with the Pentax Spotmatic F and ES series.
