aux.finders (new guy question)

And you're right Robin. Mine both have the step and I believe that cameras lacking this feature only take the multi-finder. It's perfectly possible that earlier 2ds had unstepped bodies - what speeds does your camera have? Princelle seems to think that the 30,60-500 sequence is the defining characteristic of the 2d.

Jocko, one has 1/25 -1/500 unstepped, the other 1/30-1/500 stepped.Thats the model I understand will take a aux.finder.Hope to find out soon, have a 85/2 lens comming and a bid in on a finder. If Ebay doesn't work out, where else would be a good place to find a turret finder?

Hi Robin - the camera with the 1/25 sequence is an earlier model - not a 2d - which is why it hasn't got a step. It should take the turret finder with no problem: it's individual accessory finders that are the difficulty and the reason the step was added. If you don't win the e-bay finder PM me your address - I've got one I don't use and you're welcome to it free!

I've heard that the lower shoe actually helps with parallax correction when using auxiliary finders. But who knows which FSU RF they were actually calibrated with, anyway?

Ian,thanks for the offer,I won the Ebay item. The Fed2e came this am.I am so pleased with the camera.Looks like new, half a roll down and can't wait till tomorrow.Going to get my son into FSUs.Once he sees what Dad got he'll be hooked like me. Robin

This is important information, as I've been planning to get a dedicated viewfinder for 85mm lens. I take the preceding postings to mean that viewfinders for individual focal lengh lenses will not fit a FED1g either - can someone please confirm or refute this. I have a Leitz 5cm viewfinder and this thread prompted me to get it out and try it on a recently acquired FED1g - the accessory shoe on the FED1g was wide enough, but the top was too low so the viewfinder wouldn't go in.

Hallo Sylvaticus,

I am 99% certain that the dedicated Soviet finders will fit the FED 1g - the lip is nowhere near as high as the earlier FED 2s - but this will have to be verified by another member. I use Voigtlander 25mm and 35 mmm accessory finders without any problems. The turret multifinder also works perfectly well.

Thanks, Jocko. It's not easy to understand just what the problem is about without having the relevant cameras in front of you. But this page

www.geocities.com/fzorkis/fed2_11.html

illustrates it nicely. Scroll down to two pictures of the accessory shoe, with and without the "step". Without the "step", the shoe is sunk below the top of the surrounding rangefinder housing which will obstruct low protruding parts of an accessory in the shoe. With the "step", the shoe is raised so it is flush with the top of the rangefinder housing.

In comparison, the 1g accessory shoe is not sunken but is flush with the top of the rangefinder housing and the dedicated viewfinders should fit.

The difficulty with my Leitz 5cm viewfinder was due to the shoe side flanges being too tight, so I eased them open a bit with a wide screwdriver and it fits nicely now.
