most of us carry our gear in a bag, be it an old diaper bag, a student book bag or a fancy leather custom made jobbie...some of us spend 10 bucks and others many more times that amount...each with equal pride i might add.

so let's take a look at what we might spend, on average, on a favourite bag.

Black Domkes, two of them.

The big F1XB for EUR 100 (second hand) and a F3XB (much smaller) for EUR 65 (second hand).

Might get me a third one, another F1XB. One for gear and one for lighting stands and flashes etc.

Also have a Domke Outdoor backpack, whole different beast, made from blue nylon. Cost me EUR 60. For when I have to haul a lot for a long stretch.

With the goal of trying for a look of a non-photo bag, I go with military surplus - and - when I do have to use a real photo bag - I buy it used.

I like leather bags like Wotancraft's, which tend to be more expensive (it doesn't rain much here in Northern California). Nowhere near as much as the Leica Schedoni bag, available for a mere $4500...

I don't remember, I burned the receipts, I don't need to know.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Billinghams - purchased used in Mint condition in the $100 region. Love them both and don't mind getting them dirty.

Down the line I see myself buying something from Billingham in black and brand new to carry to work.

Main carry is an Ona bowery which is like $120USD, but if I'm carrying more gear I'll use a Billingham Hadley Pro which is mid-200's.

I look for non-camera bags that can take a camera protection insert. The two items combined come out to a about $70

I've been through a series of Crumpler bags - a backpack and a slew of messenger bags - all around the $120 mark, and they've been... ok. Not as much interior space as their overall size promised, the linings tended to fray, and using the rain covers was a pain in the arse.

Last purchase was a well-worn Billingham 445, and in all honesty I can't see myself needing anything else for a loooooooong time.

Snagged up my workhorse here in the classifieds for chumps change.

Domke F4AF black.

The lifers bag.

One Billingham Hadley Pro -which I also carry to work every day and which goes with me on most international trips, and the Hadley Pro Large which has one shortcoming: unlike the Hadley Pro, it lacks a carrying handle. Both will last for decades.

Joe,

I didn't vote.

About 5 years ago I bought a leather Louis Vuttion bookbag for about $2.3K. This thing is built to last and now it displays a wonderful patina. I use Domke inserts to pad my cameras further. Actually not an expensive bag considering how I use it almost daily.

My other two leather bags are from Leica. One I bought from Adorama for $69.00, and it is brown leather with a double zip top opening with a side pocket that can hold a dozen rolls of film. With the right small lens on one M-body, it can also accomodate a second M-body with a longer lens, and there is a trapdoor panel that can stow either a third lens or more film. What I love about this bag is that it is very compact with rigid sides, yet I can hold two rigged cameras and a third lens.

I also own a black never-ready case that was made for a R8-R9 that I kinda use like a large pocket to hold a rigged camera. This leather bag only cost me $100.00 from my friends at B&H. Since I tend to carry two cameras rigged with TA Rapidwinders and TA Rapidgrips, I carry one camera in my right hand like a weapon ready to use with my second camera stored in the R8-R9 Never-Ready case. There is also a side pocket that can hold about a dozen rolls of film. To give you an idea of the size of this bag it fits my new R8 rigged with the motor/winder with a 50 Lux "E60" mounted.

I got 3 Quantaray bags on sale for $40.00 about 10 year ago. One for the office, and two for me. One of mine cradles the 167mt and 4 lenses, a flash, and a FX103. The other my Kiev outfit, with a Yashica flash, and a Welta Weltini. For my Fujica outfit, I got a kind of big canvas bag for about $35.00 from the PX about about 40 years ago. For my Super Press 23, I have an aluminum case with swingout doors on top, and I don't remember what I paid for it, but under $50.00. The latter two, especially the aluminum, are mostly for organization. I wouldn't want to carry them, but could the canvas if I had to for a short distance.

I also have a couple of gifted drink should bags, one for my 4x5 lenses and 120 insert, the other for a 9x12, a Mamiya 6, a Welta Welti, with two light meters.

Geesh, I don't know how I acquired all those bags. Life would be simpler if I had to choose better what I needed, instead of stress on what outfit I wanted to take.

It's varied over the years.

I really like small black diaper bags, the ones I got are insulated and have held up well. I bought a Domke years ago new and it just looks better with age.

Never more than $100 USD.
