I wish that Haitian guy had bought the local photo supply/pro lab and kept that going. We have too many Chinese restaurants here.

Really Al?
How many is "too many"?
Is "too many" equal or more than the number of Starbucks? McDonald's? Burger King? etc.?
Curious,
Dave

Within a km of here? 2 Burger King, 2 McDonalds, 2 Subway, 1 Starbucks and 1 independant coffee house. Within about 3 km? Florida International University, Barry University, Miami Dade University, Johnson and Wales University. If anything we have an acute shortage of junk food outlets. The one photo supply still surviving is nearly ten km south of here.
I can think of 5 Chinese restaurants within a couple of km.
We have an excellent supply of coeds at Starbucks though.

I don't know how many Chinese restaurants is too many, but in my opinion one fast food place or Starbucks is too many.

Allow me to add my $0.02 to this thesis on Orthodox Jewish business practices in New York.
(1) Whatever happened to the notion of forgiveness and reconciliation, exemplified by Nelson Mandela? Boycotting B&H is like shutting the barn door after the horse has run off. More swagger than substance, as are most internet forum postings. OK, so B&H made an error of judgment, for which it is paying a price, and this history will forever be on the internet. A lot of people there are very decent, and should not be painted with a broad brush.
(2) Do all the self-righteous "we'll never do business with B&H or their ilk" gentlemen stop for a moment and think whether they buy goods that are made in China, that paragon of good business practices, with human rights for all; do they stop to think that the diamond on their wife's ring finger was a conflict-free diamond, or just something they got at a good price, and probably a blood diamond; etc. These places are a million times worse than anything at B&H or any other business in the US.
(3) These business practices are nothing more than witchhunts for careerists at EEOC (this department should be shut down). If a company doesn't want to hire particular races, let them do so, and word will get out and business will go elsewhere. When I graduated from business school, companies like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and so on, did not even consider interviewing Jews or other ethnicities. Most of their employees had roman numeral after their names. Drexel Burnham Lambert was one of the first institutions to hire Asians. The world has changed since then. Not by being vindictive, but by finding places of advancement. It's just plain silly to read too much into these things and form sweeping conclusions from them.
Why is photographic equipment the only thing that has to be pure as can be, but in any other endeavour, who cares about the source or the working conditions?
I for one, will continue to shop at B&H.
Peace.

The first time I walked into B&H the hiring bias was so obvious that I joked to my friend, "This is legal?" Guess it isn't.![]()
If we have 1500 employees and you see 100 of them in the store, can you really make this determination? And, we've noted that a Hasidic employee is considerably more visible due to hair and clothing choices, so it's quite possible to overlook our non-Hasidic employees. B&H is an equal opportunity employer and obeys all federal, state, and city laws on hiring and employment.
Henry handled himself in a very courteous and professional manner.
Thank you.
Now that you mention it, if I remember correctly, PDN ran a story about a panoramic picture of B&H´s lunch room , for an add a few years ago. And, yes, indeed it was Kosher
.
I'm not sure a room can be kosher, but I do know I can eat anything I want in any room in B&H, including the ham & cheese I had for lunch last week.
These business practices are nothing more than witchhunts for careerists at EOC
In fiscal year 2008, the EEOC received a record 10,601 national origin discrimination complaints nationwide, an increase of 13% from the prior year and up 50 % from about 7,000 charge filings a decade ago.

I met a man once...
who gives a flying flip.
ever try to get a job at hooters being man?
aside from that, I never shop at b&h anyway. They're closed too much, and I've received the wrong items from them far too many times to buy from them ever again. Aside from that, my guess is that the whole thing wasn't racially motivated but rather some goof up in keeping equal parts of equal races equally payed.

Bottom line: B&H settled the lawsuit. Lawsuits are settled for a reason.
Yup. Often because it's quicker/easier/cheaper/less damaging than fighting them, even when they're frivolous or vexatious.
I'm not saying that this suit was either: I don't know. But there are bad-but-practical reasons for settling law suits as well as good ones.

I wonder if they'd hire a Muslim woman who wore the traditional hajib. I know that Starbucks has no problem with it.

I've never been to NY and have only bought batteries, online, from B&H. I have no opinion about the case at hand. But the above is laughable.
1. Goldman Sachs was started by a Jew. Their most well-known employees of the past fifty years have been Jewish. There's plenty of others there to, but your assertion that they wouldn't "even consider interviewing" Jews is hilariously ignorant.
2. "The world has changed since then" only because of vigilant people fighting injustice. Do we really need to quote millenia of history demonstrating what happens when people think it can't happen anymore? Are you for real? Sorry, but the market doesn't solve every problem. Maybe we should have let people vote with their wallet on the slave trade. Just don't buy those cotton breeches, suh!

actually they did.. slavery became an impediment to capitalism. that's how it ended.

Spare me the glib conceits. Whatever the motivation and politics surrounding emancipation (which is quite a diverse story itself), people "voting with their dollars" did not make the difference. That is the point.

OK i'll throw in my worthless 0.02!
1st, B&H should just be thankful that they did this to latinos & not another ethnic group. Instead of just talking about it here, we would be watching Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson on Fox News!.....talk about racism! They sure got the hell out of Durham when they found out that girl was lying about the Duke Lacrosse players.
2nd, I wonder who is lying here? EEOC maybe?
3rd, I hope the employees at B&H get paid for the week they will be closed during passover! I'm betting they are.
last, I wonder how many of those latino's are illegal in this country.
