I post process most of my images on a mac computer at work, but they are noticeably lighter on my PC screen. I learned somewhere along the line that mac and pc use a different gamma rating (or whatever it is).

Is there a way to optimize my web images for both screens? Or do I have to deal with the fact that most are using PC's and I should just darken my images more?

Color Calibrate both of your monitors ... then if the image is still different on each monitor then there might be a another issue

but generally monitor calibration is the culprit

i havent tried either of these yet, my powerbook needs a new screen 🙁

ps, i dont know if this goes for all mac lcds, or just mine, but the default color settings were quite a bit warmer

The only solution you can have to get proper &W image to display properly across machines/browsers is to embedd an ICC profile in the JPEG. Otherwise the JPEG decoder judt picks whatever is convenient and display it as-is.
Problem is, most browsers are just able to display properly if the profile is sRGB. The worst is that most of them are unable to even use embedded profiles if they are in grayscale JPEGs, too!

Therefore the best way to have "across the board" display is to:

+ Take your 8 bits grayscale file in photoshop
+ Convert it to RGB color
+ "Convert to Profile" and choose sRGB
+ Save your JPEG /making sure to tick the "Embedd sRGB profile"!/
