The route that CDL recommended sounds very nice...

Also, this would definitely be a good time to visit Nice. I was there last year in late November, and it was pretty much tourist-free. A little chilly in the evenings, but the daytime was sunny and beautiful.

Another piece of advice: If you are planning on travelling around Christmas, decide well in advance where you will be, and make arrangements for hostels, etc. The two weeks before and after tend to be very busy times, and it can be quite hard to find a place to live.

You might want to try http://www.couchsurfing.com/. Its a movement that lets people from all over the world stay with each other for free. It will be way cheaper than hostelling.
