Backup

I worked 30 years in I.T.

Do not store backup (at least weekly backup) in the same place than the computer.
Well, depends on data importance, paranoia levels, etc.

I could put one of my drives in another building -- but unless the building is a LOT further away than the most obvious choices, the risks from earthquake, meteor strike and nuclear war are very similar. The risk of fire would be greatly reduced with two buildings, but that's about all. And it's a pretty tiny risk to begin with. Round here, most other easy choices would be at greater risk of flooding.

How about burying it in some obscure place that is not likely to be built over, preferably a small island. Make your own treasure map and give it the antique look by pasting it with egg and giving it a while in the oven. And don't let the parrot talk. Aaarrr.
