Hi all
I have a quite new Epson 4990
from time t time I have felt something was "a bit" wrong with the scan, but nothing like this:
I just did a test, scanning on center and four corner the same, quite sharp neg of a test (newspaper) here are the results for the center and one of the corner (all 4 are at the same level)
Is this normal?
Has anyone experienced the same problem?
Thanks!

You've ruled out the lens? The best lenses made have lower resolution in the corners. Maybe the Epson is showing you that.

Hi
I'm not sure I understand what kens..
I scanned the same neg at 5 points on the surface of the flatbed.
On the four periferical scans, the results are out of focus.

The taking lens on the camera. Is it just as sharp in the corners as it is in the center?
The Epson negative holders may not be perfectly flat and they may not be at a the correct height. You may want to invest in the Betterscanning holders with the glass inserts. GOOGLE can find Betterscanning.
I wish I could find a nice clean low mileage Epson 4990 cheap.

For my little experiment, what I did was the I scaned the center portion of the same, sharp neg in five locations on the flatbed, So I doubt the taking lens is changing anything. The center scan is the benchmark for all four others and it is noticeably sharper.
Thanks for the tip on the betterscanning, I'll have a look.

It's a consumer flatbed scanner. It's not flat and square. It's not perfect. It cost what? $200 tops? Be thankful it does anything.
Have a look here for what you can expect from perfect negatives and an Epson 4990 scanner.

4990 scan at Ken Lee's web pages...
What's not to like?
For the money, the Epson 4990 is a very good scanner. I just wish I could find one.

There's nothing not to like about this scanner, beside mine seems to have a flaw, or at least that's what I want to understand....
The scan of the flowers is superb, no doubt...

I have an Epson 4990, and it's okay, but for results like that one above it looks like he scanned a medium format negative. Then again, I might be very very bad at scanning....
