I have tried Google and the forum but I can't find which Barnacks have 1/1000 s shortest shutter speed. The minimalistic Ic och perhaps Iic have gotten my attention but it seems that they are lacking the short shutter time. Is there a short answer to the question which of the old Leicas have 1/1000?

The "old" Leica I, II and III does not have 1/1000s
The IIIa, IIIb, IIIc, IIIf and IIIg do have 1/1000s

Not sure about the "newer" I+II c/f/g.

Ed: At my IIIa the speed dial locks in a bit elevated position at 1/1000s

Quick check is to look on ebay and check the photos

I would not have understood the difference between red and black dial IIf. Thanks so far.

It's still a mystery to me why the Ic doesn't have 1/1000s. Were they considered cheaper versions? I would have thought that the Ic had industrial or medical use and would benefit from short speeds.

Hi, Quote from the book "Leica, The 1st 50 years" by G Rogliatti. "After the war there was a strong demand for Leicas of any type. So the type IIc was produced being simply a IIIc minus the slow speed knob in front".......The Shutter speeds were 1/30 to1/500. The Leica 1c replaced the Leica Standard and was used mostly for scientific purposes and didn't
have a viewfinder or rangefinder, speeds from 1/30 to 1/500 also. Both came out in 1948. Regards

The IIIa, b, c, d, f & g, the 72, and some of the Leica Reporters which were IIIa-based had 1/1000 sec shutters. I don't know that there was actually anything different about the shutter, just an extra hole drilled in the rotary release mechanism.

Cheers,
Dez
