Basel, Switzerland, ideas?

Hi.
Seems i'll be in Basel for a few days, next week. Probably will have some time for myself as well. I know Basel is a bit on the fields, not really high mountains, but I could travel a bit around.
Any ideas of things to see/do in the city or its surroundings, eventually somewhere a few hours distance from it? (relying on public transportation)

I've been there a couple of times as my bird has a mate there. The centre is pretty cute in a Swiss kind of way, Zurich is 30-40 (?) mins on the train (expensive mind) and that's about it really...

Zurich and Luzern are pretty close. And so are the Rhine Falls (quite impressive for European standards).

I live in Zurich and must admit that I don't know Basel very well but there's a nice photography museum in Basel called Schaulager (www.schaulager.ch). I'm not sure, though, if there's an exhibition at the moment.

As kully said, to Zurich it takes about 30-40 minutes by train (price is 30 swiss francs one way).

If you want the full cliché Switzerland experience I suggest you go to Luzern. A little more than an hour away from Basel (price is the same as Basel-Zurich) and it's really pretty (with a lake and mountains and all) 🙂

Only one option i would say ........ go for the Berner Oberland .... take a train to Grindelwald and enjoy Eiger/ Jungfrau ... Mountain scenery does not get better and more breathtaking worlwide than in that area!

My 2nd choice would be Luzern area ...

I forgot about Luzern/Lucerne (so many spellings..) - super recommended, but I went on a glorious sunny day.

Take film with you BTW - suprisingly expensive (as is everything actually, 'cept fags)..

So we covered Switzerland 🙂 I also second the recommendation of
Berner Oberland, very impressive.

Great thing about Basel is that it is at the border of three countries.

It's not very far by train to go to Alsace (like Strasbourg) or the
Black Forest, either ...

Also you can rent a car and cruise the Autobahn 🙂 Speed limits though until 50km north of Basel, so be careful.

If there is a strike at the airport (ha!) and you have some time, I can also recommend Interlaken - it beats Lucerne (I think) for Swiss twee charm.

don't forget about the art museum fondation beyeler (http://www.beyeler.com/fondation/index_language.html) and the vitra museum @ weil am rhein (http://www.design-museum.de/); both only a bus ride away. these are must-see locations for lovers of fine contemporary architecture. should be easy to locate on a greater metro area map and together constitute a half-day excursion as they are along the way for each other. I caught a bus in the late morning, saw both, and had time to visit the Jean Tinguely museum back in Basel before I caught a train back to Zurich for a late dinner.

I've got a similar upcoming trip to another city and am thinking about the markets or the airport for photo opps. Also the art gallery for looking but probably not photographing.

Already so many suggestions, for what I know all valiid and interestig ! I do not add any more, just recommend the museum foundation beyeler and the vitra to fill your interest for art and if like mountain ( think there are not so many in netherland!) as already mentioned suggest go to Grindewald and take the train to Jungfraujoch (more than 3.000 m above sea level). If you are lucky with the weather is really super !
