Basic digital photo book

What would be a good book for someone starting in digital photography. I would need something very basic such as understanding basic file formats, histograms and post processing. Also what would be a post processing program that would be good for a beginner to learn on.

Not a book, but a great source of digital photography info. I sent this link to my son-in-law recently since he has started to become interested in photography.
