To use my Minolta lenses, I was gifted with the much derided Sony A290, unashamedly plastic ,older sensor, lacking all but the basic requirements of manual control, said to be of marginally poorer performance to the contemporary Nikon...but I often prefer it to the more capable ,yet still entry level, Sony A35 with EVF.

I love using the A290 with old Minolta 35mm-80mm and the outdated Leica Digilux 3 with lighter Olympus zooms - both,by current standards abysmally specified.

The Pentax K10d probably has a few more features, but I am currently revisiting using with 'new' £5 Pentax manual focus 50mm f2 which is quite a relief in may ways.
Like the M8, it's great just to vary exposure as I wish and cause the subject to snap into focus.

The A35 has a more modern sensor ,a few scene modes and reasonable low light capabilities, but overall, I prefer the clarity of a rangefinder or SLR viewfinder.

Of course, a better specified camera offers more flexibility and improved image quality, but it appears to me that these outdated or lesser cameras are capable of providing an acceptable level of enjoyment and image quality.

Nothing wrong with modern plastics.. especially when you've got to carry a camera around all day. Personal favorite: Nikon's D40; weighs almost nothing, and still packs a punch.

I don't quite follow how basic dslr leads to basic snaps.....? It's a human who either puts or not some work into picture. Snaps and photographs are made by all types of cameras and lenses.
