Batch proofing with scanner

Hi,

I'm interested in making what amounts to the digital equivalent of a proof sheet. I'm thinking about putting a whole 36-frame roll of 135 B&W negatives on an 8x10 flatbed scanner and scanning the whole thing in one go at about 1000dpi. Image quality is not real important. Later, I can select a few frames out of the roll for hi-res scanning on a Plustek or maybe a darkroom print.

Would something like an Epson V600 work for this? Thanks.

Hi , I do something like what you described using an Epson 4990 scanner (I imagine the software should be similar to yours.)

I originally had the ame idea as you, i.e., to make one low-res scan of the entire roll, but I fould that due to differences in exposure and color balance between frames, as well as landscape or protrait orientation, that it was eawsier for me to select each frame individually in the software (draw a frame), and then that frame can be easily copied (it is very quick). THEN, keeping the scanner on Auto, it will adjust the exposure and colour balance of each frame. I set it up so each frame ends up being about 800 px on the long side - plenty big to judge composition, sharpness, etc.

This is what works for me anyway. I hope my description was clear enogh to understand!

I think Epson V600 lacks a suitable film holder for this purpose (please someone correct me if I'm wrong). Epson V700 however does have a suitable film holder for scanning the whole roll in one go.

The v600 doesn't have a full width light source in the lid so it would not be able to accomplish what you desire.
