beards...a curiosity

I used to think that in the 1800's early 1900's men had a hard time getting a shave, no available Bic and 3, 4 or 5 blade disposable razors.
Now I realize it was, and now is again a fashion trend, and I'm the odd man out.

I have a beard, and a mustache, or maybe that's just considered part of the beard.

The reason? I am fundamentally a lazy person, as well as a scardey cat. The idea of getting up every morning and putting a razor to my face and neck before I am fully awake sounds like a non starter to me.

I shave once a week, on Monday morning. Then I let it grow out the remaining 6 days of the week and repeat the next Monday.

I have never cared for fashion. I have generally worn a beard since getting out of the Marine Corps in 1985, sometimes shaving when the urge hits me. Longer or shorter, Fu Manchu, Van Dyke, or full beard, whatever I feel like doing. Whether it was the trend or not. That's just me. I have no interest in going along with whatever the current zeitgeist happens to be.

Life changes things... 🙂

Clean shaven through around 53ish.

Tried it on and off but it's stuck around this time for over a year. It hides my triple chins easier than exercising and dieting.

When I put my kippah on my wife says I can pass for jewish with ease. I'm not, but my sons are so happy to. It also hides one of my growing bald spots.

I have a beard... and I`m bald. Once I grew the beard I was no longer suspected of being the police when out photographing in neighborhoods that are suspicious of police. Also, there was a change in my dating life too once I grew the beard. Unfortunately, it has not led to more gallery shows or art super-stardom...hahah.

I've worn a beard since I was 56 years old. I started growing it after I cut my chin in three places in a row while shaving one morning. I looked at the damage, and I said, "Self, you're 56 years old. You don't have to shave if you don't want to." And I haven't. I keep it trimmed, and sort-of neat looking.

There was an old man with a beard,
Who said, "It is just as I feared.
Two owls and a hen, four larks and a wren,
Have all made their nests in my beard."

Edward Lear.

It's been pretty well established that I'm a lazy sort so, of course, I have a beard. I grew a beard when I was in college in the 60's because...well, hair was a thing back then and a beard kinda went with the shoulder length locks I had. I shaved and got a haircut when I graduated school and started looking for a job. Once I was established in the workplace, the beard returned. I've probably shaved completely a couple of times since then but I've never been bald-faced for very long. Unfortunately the long hair is long gone and what remains has also been going rather quickly these days.

Has anyone else noticed that as you get older the hair on your head stops growing while you begin to grow hair in places you never had it before?
