beards...a curiosity

I don’t shave with a razor, but I also wouldn’t say I’m bearded. Every two weeks or so I’ll take out the electric clippers and trim all the hair on my head to a very short stubble. It’s for the sake of convenience, for comfort, and also vanity - because I’m balding, I think I look better that way.

In 2010 I broke my elbow and couldn't shave. I was 51. Grew a beard for the first time since my twenties (when I had one just to see if it came out... and it did!). I shaved it promptly after getting my arm out of the cast. Then, in 2012 I broke my wrist and couldn't shave again, so here came another beard. This time I left it stay for a long time (until about 2016), when I got bored of the bearded look.

Then, this summer, on a whim, I simply stopped shaving for a couple of weeks before going to Spain and now I'm bearded again. I kinda like it. All I do every morning is shave the corners to keep my beard in shape, and every week I trim it.

Correlation with creativity? Maybe in the past, not now...

I started growing a beard on my 50th birthday a few months ago. The salt & pepper beard looks very age-appropriate (no more pretending that I am young!) and most people seem to like it.

"Has anyone else noticed that as you get older the hair on your head stops growing while you begin to grow hair in places you never had it before?"

Yes, it's pretty hard not to notice. Now I have hair in places where I didn't even used to have places.

Bearded up in 1973, have never seen myself since (plus, my great-great-grandfather, Alfred set the example). Saved thousands in shaving equipment. Length has altered through the years, but the color has definitely kept pace with my age. Here I am last week taking phone donations at the best station in the known universe, KEXP (.org) in Seattle. This association (along with photography!), more than anything else, keeps me feeling young.

And then you comb your ear hair up and over, and your bald spot is covered.

When I was young I figured out that I never wanted to have any job that required I shaved or wore a tie. One of my smartest moments.

When I was younger I went with goatees for the most part, you know, 'cause I was cool. These days though I am too lazy for goatees, so I just let it grow and trim it every couple weeks. I am not cool any more either so goatees seem kind of stupid.

I use to cut it all off every few years just to remember what I look like without it. Then I'd immediately regret it so I gave up on doing that. I haven't seen my face for a good 8 years I am guessing. Nobody misses it....

A friend used to answer this question by saying he grew his beard to conceal his horrible facial scars. He didn't have any - just liked to shock. I don't either, but I've had a beard since I got out of the RCAF many decades ago. I hope it makes my chin look better.

I`m shocked .
Grooming standards have clearly slipped on here over the years .
Myself I always make sure that I`ve had a shave and wear a collar and tie before I post on this forum. 🙂

I have a beard... and I`m bald. Once I grew the beard I was no longer suspected of being the police when out photographing in neighborhoods that are suspicious of police. Also, there was a change in my dating life too once I grew the beard. Unfortunately, it has not led to more gallery shows or art super-stardom...hahah.

John,

This reminds me of when we were shooting in the South Bronx with Andre, and a local saw us and asked me, "Where is the crime scene." LOL.

We did not really fit in. Must of looked like the "Mod Squad" carrying our cameras.

What about all those UBER drivers beeping at us like we needed to escape from the Bronx pronto.

Proper thing too - and may I say that your sartorial style and grooming is reflected in your posts here Sir. 🙂
