Having only recently starting to develop my own B&W film I’ve found that I’m really enjoying it and now realise it is so easy! So with a bit of help from Mr Google, I’ve also discovered that you can make your own developing fluid (eg Rodinal). Does anyone have suggestions on which recipe to start with? I have been using FP4 and HP5 (with Ilfosol S) and want to keep using them, so if that makes any difference please take that into account! I look forward to suggestions.

Remember I’m only a beginner so lowest toxicity (compared to other options) and easy mixing probably should be a priority if that’s possible.

Andrew, I suggest you get a copy of "The Darkroom Cookbook" by Stephen G. Anchell. It and the "Film Developer Cookbook" by the same author are highly recommend by a number of experienced darkroom people. The Darkroom Cookbook is a good collection of formula, advice and information that will allow you to decide where and what to start off with and why.

If you want to try Parodinal, look here http://www.digitaltruth.com/techdata/parodinal.php

Look at the post on APUG for additional information and here in the darkroom forum.

Cheers

Sound easier tha it really is. Start with something simple like D76 or D23.

Both are fine developers.

Rodinal can be easily purchased and is cheap, so why bother.

Unblinking Eye has a few formulas listed.

Gainers PC-TEA and some others can be found here.

If you want to try some more esoteric stuff Photographers Formulary has some pre-mixed, you may be interested in trying some pyro. Formulary also has some chemicals available.

Have fun, take notes, and let us know what you discover.

I've made some contact prints with coffenol. Look on Flickr, there is a DIY developer group there.
