Beginner's Luck-Kentucky Elk (not Elf) Hunting

A few months ago, I shared the news that my son is getting into hunting in a big way after winning the out-of-state Elk hunting lottery. Mind you he is on a lucky streak these days after catching a 30" bass in our lake last Spring.😱 I tried to get him to buy some Lotto tickets, but...

Anyway, he left with two other friends (sherpa duty) on Friday with the truck, RV trailer, etc. and arrived in the wood in eastern Kentucky on Friday afternoon. They scouted their hunting areas and saw and heard a lot Elk around. Bugling like crazy.😎

Saturday morning, they show up at their guide-selected hunting location and with 30 minutes, my son shot a 6x6 elk and spent the next four hours field dressing, etc. and still had not finished when I talked to him! One shot, one elk. Most expensive bullet ever! No idea how much meat will be coming home but he is having the antlers mounted (or maybe the head, I dunno).

So, my office-working son is now an accomplished hunter with the idea that it is all too easy! Proud that he got that first one and hoping he brings home a couple of turkeys with his cross-bow, too. With his luck he will get two with one arrow...🙄

Ah, to be young again.... on second thought, Nah.....too much work.😛

I wish I had taken up the offers on learning to hunt when I lived Colorado, I've always wanted to give it a go. As with macro photography, I'm not sure I'd have the patience to achieve the desired results.

Nice... elk is a very tasty meat. Hope he got it around some cornfields.

BTW, never eat elk or deer from Northern Pennsylvania. Most of their food is acorns and not-so-nice junk like that. In my part of NY, it's all corn-fed. Almost as good as beef for deer, and if we had elk, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

So, to keep this in line with the technophile leanings of this board... what he shoot it with? Was it a bolt-action (the SLR of the gun world) or something fun like a lever gun (a rangefinder) or a flintlock muzzleloader (wet plate)? 270, 30-06, 45-70?? Was it a Nikon scope? 🙂

Ha! It was the SLR....Remington 700 300 mag. with an amazing scope. Forget the name of it but amazing.

He took the shoulders/head/rack to the taxidermist this morning and will get it back in February. Gives new meaning to the phrase: "Nice Rack!"....😛
