Rob Galbraith reviews the latest offering from Canon:

I found it so amusing I just had to post it.
To me it looks more like some kind of Nintendo-on-steroids with a lens attached than a real camera.

No doubt it will be hailed as a 'revolution' thanks to its 10fps, (necessary for capturing a decisive moment) 10 megapixels (almost half as much as slide film!) and machine-gun like sound whenever the shutter is triggered, not to mention it's secondary function of acting as high-calorie fat burning device (1.3kgs plus lens!) while being far more stylish than tying a brick around one's neck, even if it feels rather like one!

And last but not least, the pricetag? Well if you have to ask......

I woner how it compares in size and weight to a Kiev 60 or 80?

I am sure there are people on this forum who will buy and cherish this camera (and probably get some great results) but I must admit it represents the opposite of all the things I look for personally in a camera.

:) I predict it'll be a huge seller...news guys love Canon, as do wildlife photogs...last year in the Mara, there was a veritable forest of Canon lenses sprouting from every vehicle...

...does it have wireless internet?

...this one will sell by the bucket load...until the next one comes out.

Now then, back to processing my 120 film...

Perhaps they should call it "The Dreadnaught."

What the h_____ is inside it that needs all that room? I thought microchips were small--shows how much I know about modern electronics.

Definitely a camera the 'Governator' (aka ... Big Arnie) would have in the glovebox of the Hummer!

But still after all ... just a device for taking a photograph ... as is a Leica 1a!

Ah, the 1D MkIII, nice picturetaker, friend of mine can't wait to take delivery. He already has a MkII and a MkIIn and wants to phase out the older one. He shoots motorsports.

Just read that review, I had no idea how far behind I was with regard to knowledge of digital camera functions and digital processing. I hope they keep making Film for a few decades more

"We don't see anything about EOS-1D Mark III files that make them inferior to what has come before. We do see two things that are unchanged, however, that we think are worth calling out:

The Jaggies Canon's image processing - whether in-camera, in RAW Image Task or in Digital Photo Professional - tends to introduce jagged edges to bright reds and oranges in particular, and to a lesser extent bright blues. The effect is the most pronounced when Digital Photo Professional is doing the processing. The effect is noticeable in an unsharpened photo, and blatant in a sharpened one."

Ugh... See, most will say I'm wrong and it's no big deal but this kind of thing really irks me. I'm not saying this camera sucks, I'm sure it's very fine, but I don't see "jaggies" (a picture destroying digital artifact imo) from any film camera. Same goes for the M8 and its little IR problem. I reiterate, ugh.

Wow. I'm selling all my RF film gear and going totally digital with this Canon, and leaving all you Luddites behind in my dust!

This baby has a lot of power! No doubt pro-photographers at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will have this one in their hands!

But the SLR Canon EOS 1V HS = 10 fps, still a performer! :D

I would still take the EOS 1V-HS over the Mark-III

Why this sarcasm? Clearly this new Canon is not for you and me, but there are enough people out there who have been waiting for exactly that type of camera. If you are a sports photographer or want to shoot birds in flight, then this camera is a heaven sent. While the price is high, it is not too high when you are making money using the camera. As to image stabilized lenses - they are essential, if you don't want to use a tripod all the time and IS makes it possible to even handhold a 400mm Telephoto Lens and get sharp pictures.

Gigantism is also the industrys sure-fire way of selling image-stabiliser lenses to the (dumb)masses.

Man...I wish I had the money to be one of those (dumb)masses.
I've been shooting with borrowed IS lenses recently. 400mm f5.6, 1/125th, very handy.

I don't get the animosity toward this kind of gear. Clearly it's not the right kind of camera for many people here, but it certainly is the top of the heap in its part of the world.

I'd hate to be on the sidelines of some event trying to make my living with my R3A.

No doubt they'll sell a great number of them to guys who just like to fondle the lastest and greatest gear, but I think there might be one or two among us who have been known to indulge as well.
