Bessa II filter size

I've got a Bessa II, with a Color-Skopar lens, and have a 37mm push on lens shade for it. However, I was wondering if anyone knew what the the actually thread size was on the lens?

I think I would prefer to use a screw in lens hood. It gets pretty brutal pushing the slip-on hood onto the lens and I know, one of these days, I'm going to do some damage to the glass.

Any thoughts?

I'm searching for a 37mm hood myself, perhaps a yellow filter. I can't seem to find one...

I think a screw in hood would not be very practical : every time you fold/unfold, you have to unscrew it. It seems easier to use a (plastic?) slip on.

Does a filter can be left on the lens when folding?

I have a Bessa II with the Color-Skopar, and I don't think it has any threads in the front. All of my hoods and filters (including Voigtlander-branded ones) are push-on...

SH: eBay has lots of push 37mm lens hoods. Personally, I think a screw in hood might be more practical. You have to to remove the hood every time you close the camera, I think unscrewing might be safer to wrenching the thing off. I think I'm clumsy....

Mike: it does have a thread. I think it's either 33.5mm or 34mm.

I still prefer snap on to screw : it is quite easy to destroy a screw when you are in a hurry, especially when the screw shade is after-market (not exactly the same pitch).

Actually there's a thread but it is for the ring locking the front lens.
I doubt the pitch of the thread which seems quite wide will match those of the screw-on fiters which are narrow.

Nick,

That's what I'm hoping. Just ordered a 35.5 mm step up ring. Would be great if I could use a screw in. Just not comfortable with the amount of force I have to use with the slip on.

Either way, it's a great camera.

Thanks for the tip, Alex. Will try again with the step up ring.

As I said, in a previous post, I have a 37mm slip on hood but I hate having to stick it on every time I open up the camera. Knowing how clumsy I am, it's only a matter of time before I damage something.

Southern California, eh? Slightly better weather than North London....

Alex, despite much gentle tweaking I've had to admit defeat with my particular step-up ring.

I like the tip about using a vintage filter. I'll cycle down to mwclassic (where I bought the camera for a song) and will pick one up.

I owned a Bessa before. Always regretted selling it. Got this one for such a great price it's a keeper.

What's the camera in the photo? 6x9 Super Ikonta?

Thanks for the info.

I have a 6x6 Super Ikonta, a 533-16, I think it's pre-war. Looks like an uncoated lens. If I use a slip on lens hood with this camera it becomes almost impossible to focus.

I don't seem to enjoy much success with slip on hoods...

MWC are great people. Maybe it helps that I can go in and personally nag them. I get the sense they are a bit slow in replying to emails etc but I can vouch that they get bombarded with enquiries the whole time.

My Bessa II, with the Color Skopar, is in fabulous condition. I bought it from MWC for £220. That strikes me as a great price.

Will go for an Actina. They seem to be plentiful on eBay. Thanks.

The Ensign looks great. Would love an 820 Auto-Range but can't afford it. The Kershaw III appeals -it has a Taylor Hobson lens.

Hadn't considered reliability issues with the shutter. Either way, I'm sticking with the Bessa. The price is way, way too good.

Will cycle down to MWC at the start of next week to look for hoods. See if I can get an Actina for less than on eBay.

I am coming to this forum late, but have some info that might help that is not really from me or my experience but someone who has been working with Voigtlanders and Zeiss mediums for decades...

The Bessa uses press on 37 filters...the Ikontas 40.5 screw-ins, and the Bessa rangefinders, new, use 37.5s.

It appears one must make a slip on as above...in case of the older folders. I have a Bessa I, Mess and Bessa II. I have searched for filters...rien, so I build them out of brass stock, and epoxy, carefully, the base to the oversize.

I would post pix, but site seem to not like direct insertion...curiously.

I find out more, will post. I have lurked here for a bit and this is only post I felt qualified to answer, maybe a couple others I skipped.
