My R has the shutter halfway down, and stuck. Shutter release doesn't do anything, wind-on lever won't go. I've rewound the film, jiggled the advance sprocket, nothing seems to work.
I expect it will go for repair. My question is: where should I send it, and what might I expect the monetary damage to be?
Thanks in advance for any counsel.

I had a jam up myself a while back. Cost me about $120 to fix and have it CLA'd. It was a local shop here in Providence. Others here suggested to me to try giving the back of the camera a light hit with the open palm of your hand to see if it will un jam things. Didnt work for me. Good luck.

No major deal. Did happen on my R as well, once. 50EUR on a local repair shop to get it fixed.

Well, under the heading of 'nothing to lose, really', I started bapping it against my palm. After about 4 or 5 hits, the outer shutter curtains came halfway down, then after a couple of more times, it started working! Thanks for the suggestion!

haha...cool! Shoot away. Just remember not to wind the film advance too quickly and you should be fine.

I had the identical problem and fixed it myself, as have several other people on this forum. It is dead easy: just remove the bottom plate and re-connect the linkage on the right side. Here are photos of what to do:
