Have been eyeing off an olive R2 these past few days and the 28/3.5. Do you think I'd get away without an external VF? Never seen the framelines for the R2. Many thanks.

In my experience - yes. As long as you don't wear glasses at least.

I have an Bessa R and the 28/3.5 but also have a viewfinder available if I take the time to put it on camera and the correct framing is importantl.

Difference between R and R2: None as far as the VF is concerned. I just bought a 28/3.5 for my R and will try to make do w/o the external finder for now. Somebody suggested composing with the 90 mm framelines if there's time; that's what I'll try... 😎

Try the 90 lines and use 1/3rd composition (and the full finder). Works well.

Congrats on the lens. High up there in quality.

Cheers,

Roland.

You can get away with not using a finder most of the time, but I always use a finder with the 28 if I care about the shots. Took some great pictures with my Bessa-R and 3.5 28 of the Napali coast on Kauai a couple of years ago ... thought they were clean, but ended up with little bits of boat in the frame. It was very depressing, especially since I had a finder in my bag, but was just too lazy to get it out.

I used to use a Canon 28/3.5 with a Bessa R quite regularly and never used an external finder. OTOH, I always compose with the expectation that cropping will be needed for the final image. It's the LF shooter in me 😉
