Bessa tough decision - need assistance

i get into the discussion (can I, Alain?) to ask something different but similar: is there a big difference between a bessa R and an R2 or R2a or a R3?

R2A and R3A have an automatic mode, they are M mount cameras - the sams as Leica M cameras.

They are basically the same camera with slightly different viewfinders, in respect of magniication and framelines, example: the R2A has framelines for 35mm, the R3A doesn't have 35mm framelines, it has 40mm framelines.

Look at CamaraQuest or Robert White for details.

Just wanted to say that this thread is great. I just started getting into rangefinders myself, and find myself drawn to the bessa's. I've got a FSU's and a yashica gsn right now, but I'm debating getting a bessa as well. I wonder if there's enough difference between a bessa 2 and what I've got so far to warrant the cost. I'm guessing reliability will be the first thing people say. 🙂

Hi Morgan -- Careful of your camera-naming terminology here, as there is a Bessa R2, Bessa R2a, and Bessa R2m... And "Bessa 2" is a rather well-respected medium-format folding rangefinder camera of many decades ago. 🙂

The current Voigtlander Bessa line of cameras made by Cosina is far more modern than the FED and Kiev cameras, with large bright viewfinders with framelines for multiple lenses, and through-the-lens metering. I have a Kiev 4a myself, and it can be fun, but is not comparable to a Bessa R2 for instance in ease of use.

Thanks Doug, sorry for the naming screwups, I've just started looking into these. I didn't realize there was a medium format bessa. I do like that the R3a has an aperature priority mode...
