Best camera ever made and why?

As yet I'm still undecided between the OM1 and the FM2. The Spotmatic is also very much to my liking, as well as the M6 or the R2...

The Kodak Box Brownie my Mum gave me when I was a little boy or maybe my first real camera the Canon FTb ... both of them watching me as I type this 🙂

I do not know what is the best, but of the ones I have used that have given much joy in use:
35mm Oly OM1 or Canon F1/AE1 and Fujica AX3
MF Fuji GS645s and Mamiya 645
Digital Oly EP1 and Ricoh Gx100.
Of these my wife bought me the EP1 when I got my BA and the GX100 as a surprise and paid for the OM1
Alas the F1 was stolen in 1990 as was the AE1p I had I got a new AE1p and an original AE1 I prefer the feel of the original.
Alas best is a hard thing to quantify in a camera, do you want speed or sharpness or the ability to make big enlargements or something you can fit in your pocket.

Those and others are nice cameras. I still have and use my original Fujica ST 901. I had an AX-3, and it was nice, but I just couldn't like it like my 901 so I got rid of it. I always had a belief, justified or not, that the Fujinon M42 lenses were a little better.

Other cameras that I personally like would be my Super Press 23, VAG 9x12 with RF, my Zeiss Ikon 6x9, and certainly my Contax 167mt with 50mm f/1.4 T*.

Ah and here again I am confused why, on a Leica centric site like this, Canon manual focus film SLRs (FTb, F1) get such short shrift. Unlike Nikons, their controls rotate in the same direction as the Leica (the majority of them, of course). Great combo shooting, Canon F1 for macro and telephoto and your favorite M for short. Glad two see two prior posters agree w me.

I have found my FTb takes great shots despite being 40 years old and as a bonus it's so heavy that no wimpy little toe rag criminals will try to steal it, 'cause they can't lift it. I should send it off for a cla one day just to bring it back to its best.
One the rangefinder frond a Canon P looks nice and I would be tempted to own one.
Best camera ever would be the one you had in your hand at the decisive moment ... Oui?

Canon PowerShot S95
This is a very popular point and shoot camera that offers excellent image quality, and also gives you the ability to shoot 720p HD videos. Low light performance is also adequate, though the battery life could be better. The design is pretty compact, but this makes it a little difficult to grip properly. Nevertheless, the 10MP resolution, the 3.0 inches LCD screen and the ton of features available make this a worthy choice. At $449, this camera may be slightly pricey, but its quality is unquestionable.

Best camera? Tough, tough question. There are various parameters. I think the original Nikon F would certainly be in the top 5 along with the Leica M3. Mechanical reliability, proven track record with professionals, robustness, etc., etc...

Personal taste:
-Leica M6 (best travel camera)
-Konica Hexar AF (best quick/quiet/discreet street camera)
-Canon EOS-1v (best auto-SLR, weatherproof, small for what it is)

It's such a difficult question. Film wise I'd have to say Nikon F5 because of reliability, weather resistance, the incredible meter and A/F.
For manual focus SLR i'd say my favorites are the Leicaflex SL and SL2 for their tank like build and superb viewfinders.
For rangefinders I would say ANY M apart from 5! Add some black paint and even better!
Robustness, focus, tactile feel of solid engineering.
From the above choice just from myself, one can see there is no one perfect camera. I have my choices and use them for different things.
