Best developer for HP5

Adox Atomal 49 (AKA Adox ATM49). HP5 is a grainy film, this developer tames the grain without losing film speed and gives wonderful tones. Take my word for it!

A friend hated HP5 Plus but I suggested him to try Ilfotec LC29 and now he loves it. I like the combination myself, but as usual YMMV.

It may not be as user friendly but I mix my own TD-201 from Anchell&Troop, works for me.
What you use depends on what you want as an end result and your technique there is no substitute for some personal experimentation.
BTW: "grainy film" ? It is 400 iso.

I would use the same as you, but then I use HC110b for everything.

have been using Microphen stock with good results, but have recently tried Barry Thornton Two Bath with results I like.

The best developer for HP5 is the same as your favorite developer for Tri-X or any other iso 400 film.

If you have not yet decided on a favorite developer for any other film, then just about any developer will do.

Hello,

I use HP5+ at 400ISO with HC-110 dissolution H (1+63) at 60F/20C for eleven minutes. Two inversions every minute. Works great.
25 years ago I remember for some reason I always exposed it at 500ISO, developped in HC-110 B for aroud 7 or 7-1/2 min...??
