Hi,

What's the best filter to get for this lens, i was going to get the 43mm B+W mrc haze filter:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/120402-REG/B_W_66023185_43mm_UV_Haze_010.html

But i also heard someone in another forum mentioned that the filter might be an issue as the shape of the glass may cause the filter to touch the lens glass? Can anyone confirm this or is there a better filter to use for this lens?

Many Thanks

You will get a huge debate over the use of a UV. But I put cheap Cokin grads in front of my lenses all the and never an issue. I use them, UVs, sometimes and sometimes not. Other than maybe causing a flare or odd reflection I don't think a UV degrades the image. I probably could take two pictures one with and one without make some large prints and would defy anyone picking the picture I used the UV with.

In 45+ years of shooting, I have never yet scratched or broken either the front element of a lens or a filter when it was fitted to a lens. (I've dropped a couple of filters and bent their mounts, but not broken the glass...)

Put a rigid lens hood on the lens to protect it and help reduce flare. Then handle the lens with some care and respect. Put a filter on to filter light.

It irritates me when people won't answer the poor guy's question about the filter and start pontificating about how they never use filters. These same guys are the ones selling off their old lenses with "cleaning marks" i.e. scratches. Dust will find a way around the opening of a lens hood. I've had a lens with hood mounted drop face down, and the hood transmitted the force to the filter, which broke the glass. But, the front element was intact and unmarked. So, many of us consider the filter to be a sacrificial piece of glass for front element protection, especially when a lens costs $1000 or more.

Coated glass filters are worth the effort.
I had a newly overhauled Summaron 35mm f/3.5 lens which I thought was a piece of junk as it seemed to flare badly. I then took off the vintage uncoated Leitz UV filter that was on it, and the sparkling clarity of the images changed my view of the lens. It also means that I no longer use uncoated filters, no matter who makes them.

More to the point about B+W 43mm filters, you need to realize that B+W use a 0.5mm thread pitch. This will fit your old Nikon RF lenses. However, I find that they don't fit modern lenses which have a 43mm x 0.75mm pitch thread. Hoya or Heliopan make the correct size pitch.

What other lenses do you have? Do you carry more than one of these with you when you're shooting with the Zeiss 35mm?

If so, what filter does it, or they, use?

One of the issues I had when considering this lens was the odd filter size. If the other lenses you carry with the are not 43mm and larger, I'd first consider a step up ring to match your other lens.

Since I travel a lot with my gear I wanted to keep my accessories to a minimum. I've settled on a 3 lens travel kit and they all take 46mm filters.

Sir, Yes Sir!!!!!

I am also using a BW MRC010 filter on a biogon 35mm. Don't see any problem. How would I know, anyway?

As for the why, well specifically with the Zeiss lenses, the caps are rubbish, so I leave the cap in the box, and carry the camera in my bag with the UV filter to protect the front instead of the cap.

OP: Yes B+W F-Pro does not touch the front element. See link from lens rentals as to why you need quality. even with "sacrificial" glass.

But 😉 Do you want the UV ? or is this for protection only? B+W make a model 007 filter which is multi coated but optically clear, specifically for protection. see link for list.

My favourite link OT for the filters, do they/don't they, argument is Lens Rentals "silly" test: They do if you use enough of them 😀

Again OT  my lens is currently in Germany for the noisy/stiff/ focus ring issue which should not happen with Zeiss glass (wherever they choose to manufacture)
