I like the Kobalux 28/3.5 on film. I have to try it out on digital.
For 28/2, my choice is the Contax/Yashica 28/2 Distagon "Hollywood." Amazing lens, floating element. The close focus would give some pretty amazing perspectives while still throwing the background out of focus...hard to do otherwise with a wide. Admittedly these are relatively uncommon.

28 Elmarit ASPH work great on X-E1, pretty small in size too.

i prefer the nikkor 28 f3.5 over my vc color skopar because of the mixed results and corner smearing with the vc 28.

I'm anything but an expert on digital sensors, but Godfrey says exactly the opposite: Could any of you illuminate me and the OP on this?
I have both an Elmarit 28 v III and a 28 Color Skopar, but no digital M to compare them.
Nescio
I have Color Skopar 28/3.5 and Ultron 28/2, and an M9 to test with. Ferider and I didn't say the opposite, we different on degree.
- The Color Skopar is closest to symmetric, very compact, and produces strong color shifting and some edge smearing on the M9.
- The Ultron f/2 lens is a retrofocus design, although not as strongly retrofocus as any SLR lens design of comparable focal length; it produces near to no color shifting or edge smearing on the M9. I've not had the opportunity to compare f/2 and f/1.9 Ultrons side by side.
Most of the later series Elmarit 28s are also retrofocus designs, just how strong I cannot say. How they interact with the M9 sensor I similarly cannot say as I haven't used any of them.

Not a part of the discussion so far, but I'm enjoying my 28/2.8 Contax G with a Metabones adapter.
