Best LTM 50mm?

I've seen some have the Jupiter 3, but havn't seen any pictures taken with it.
It would be one of the fastest FSU lenses, but how is it wide open, has a nice bokeh?
Maybe it isn't a german copy and it isn't as famous as the J-8, but it may be a good one.

I've seen a few shots with J-3, I think. I'd still like to see how it really compares to J-8.
I've been thinking about getting a faster 50mm lens, but if the wide open performance of J-3 is not really good, I think I'd rather save my funds for a VC Nokton 50/1.5. The shots I've seen from that one seem to indicate its performance wide open is quite OK, and the bokeh isn't bad, either...

I think if you could assign a valid number to the quality and divide by the price, the Jupiter-8 LTM wold rank the highest. However, in abolute terms my own favorite is the 50/2.0 Summitar collapsible. I might like a Summicron more, but I don't own one. The Summitar stunned me back in 1976 when I first acquired it and the only lenses I have seen that equal or exceed it are SLR lenses and relevant here.

Pablo,
the J-3 is also a copy of a German lens - of the 50/1.5 Sonnar...

My Favourite is probably unknown to most of you!!!
Taylor Hobson 2inch f2.0 Anastigmat. Mine was bought new in the late 70's complete with test negatives form the factory. Its a collapsible lens made in small numbers for the Reid camera. Chrome finished solid brass and phosphor - bronze, its very heavy, but beautifully finished. with adaptor it works a treat on the Bessa R2 and even collapses properly. Very sharp and flare free. (PS. its NOT for sale!! )

Damn, I was going to ask you how much ! 😛

If I'm not wrong that lens is pictured and mentioned on one of Matanle's book with the Reid, a very nice camera and indeed a while ago I saw a website with sketches and documents regarding the Reid project, but can't locate that page now...

Pablo, the J3 seems together with the J9 one of the candidates for focus problems when used at wide apertures on a non-FSU camera, or even on FSU ones. If you could get a well adjusted one from a good source, then...

Btw Oleg had a ZK (Sonnar Krasnogorsk) 50/1.5 ltm for $125, and it flew away while we were discussing about it 😛 The ZK lenses are supposed to be built directly from German parts and with German tooling.

Thanks Roman and Oscar, I've been looking arround the web for some info about it and apart from the lense description didn't find much info.
Being a German copy it makes it more appealing.
The problem of focus wide open it seems a common problem in FSU lenses.

My personal favourite is the rare Heliar 50mm/3.5 that comes with the Voigtlander T101 set.

Damn ! Gene now I'm thirsty !!! 😀

Pablo, yes, it's true that they all may be sensible to that issue, but for some reasons the J3 and 9 get a lot of publicity with that, probably the DOF (or lack of it) wide open is a reason why it's more noticeable on them.

Are the only sources for these lenses from ordering from the former soviet union? I don't see many private sales of these in the US, mostly from former soviet union vendors on the Bay. Any experiences with them, or recommendations of good vendors? How consistent is the QC on them or is one likely to have to go through several samples for a keeper? Thanks

Great J-8 Shot!

Great J-8 Shot!

Stop the presses, hold the phone...... that beer shot with the fire place in the background is the definitive Jupiter 8 shot. A low light exposure and the beers are razor sharp. Thanks for sharing that one.

LOL! You're welcome! 😀

In LTM. I have some of those.

The Canon 50mm F1.4 somedays;
The 50mm F1.5 Summarit on others;
Nikkor 50mm F1.4 for close-ups, wide-open;
Canon 50mm F1.2 is faster, and also good stopped down.

Best for what?

My nomination for WORST I have ever owned (from new! ) would be the Canon f0.95 Dream.
It was exactly like my dreams, Hazy, ill defined and not very memorable. Definitely best used as a paperweight. Not complaining mind you, some nut paid me silly money for it!!! It financed the Bessa R and T!!

john,
this is completely off topic...
a women i work with was born in scotland but moved with her family when she was a child.
i pointed out your gallery to her, thinking she might find it interesting to see where she came from.
not only does she love your stuff but, i guess, you have shot in the area she was born and she recognized some names and places from stories her dad told her.

i thought you might like to know.
