Best LTM 50mm?

I bought a Canon 50mm F0.95 after reading how bad it was. Wanted to find out for myself, and at $200 on a BIN -with some risk- I bought one. The one I got had the C-mount adapter on it, but was not the TV lens.

My first shot with it on the Canon 7:

A more recent shot.

At work I mounted it on an Infrared camera (InGaAs) sensitive out to 2microns: or 20,000 angstroms, well past IR film that goes to ~0.9microns. It formed a nice image using a 0.1milliwatt communications laser illuminating a wall 20 feet away. We bought a second one for the $25K IR camera; they were not getting mine.

john,
this is completely off topic...
a women i work with was born in scotland but moved with her family when she was a child.
i pointed out your gallery to her, thinking she might find it interesting to see where she came from.
not only does she love your stuff but, i guess, you have shot in the area she was born and she recognized some names and places from stories her dad told her.

i thought you might like to know.

joe
Thanks Joe, I MUST get back to Canada, I have folks in Toronto, Saskatoon and Calgary, Its the only place I would live after Scotland. Pass on my best wishes to her!! XXX 😱

Since this is about 50mm ltm lenses, I have a question for you gurus of fine photographic equipment. I have 3 fsu lenses, Jupiter 3 60xxx, Jupiter 8 78xxx, and an Industar 50 60something, and would like to test them. The question is how best to test them in real life, not test patterns. I like C-41 film so I'm thinking about Ilford XP 2 Super. The subject is what I am concerned about. We have a park that has brick pavers for the ground cover. I think this would be acceptable to compare edges. Suggestions 😕

I don't see much advantage of shooting paving stones over test patterns. Neither are popular real-world photographic subjects. I'm pondering doing the same comparison with some of those lenses and some others. I am not sure of the best test subject yet either.

Have a someone good looking wear a checkerboard pattern swim suit???

😀

Test patterns are known variables, and are useful for generating data that one can use to describe a lens in several ways.
There have been several ways proposed to measure bokeh, too.
All lens performance can be broken down into numbers, entered onto a table, and graphed, or analyzed.
That's what's nice about them.

What I think you are asking, you are answering in the same breath- you want to test "real life" subjects- go out and spend a Jackson on film and double that on developing, have a blast, and take a look at the pictures. If you'd like, think in advance as to what you'd normally prefer to take pictures of and go out and DO it- so that you can apply that experience to what you will be doing- otherwise, there isn't a "real world" test in the "world" that'll give you the information you want.

I've been shooting a camera for the past couple of days. I normally go out with friends and take portrait shots of them, and I take pictures of my cats, &c.
On my test roll, I went out last night, had a burger with my friends, took pictures... Well, you get the idea. I have several MORE of my cats now, too.
What I _DID_ do was make notes about how I took the shots- and what aperture/focus setting I used. I took it for granted (honestly) that the meter would work correctly, so forgave that variable.
I learned that my 90mm lens is extraordinarily sharp.
I learned that either my perception/expectation is off on my 35mm lens, or something ain't right with it (or it's supposed to be the way it is and is just a bit soft wide open, I've not tried stopping it down a touch)

Anyway, I did indeed learn what I needed to for my comfort in dealing with my common situations. I'm going to continue to explore. That's my real world learning experience. There are graphs on the company who's lenses I bought, and I've seen 'em- I'm kinda debating the 35mm graph, but the 90 is measurable with the equipment I have to be similar to what the company themselves saw.

Have fun- those are some nice lenses!

? It's default size Times- too big? Too small? It looks right on Firefox- should I change it back to the default?

(Seriously, it looks fine on my browser, but if it's either irritatingly large, or teeny, I'll just kill the tags in it and change it back to the default)

Okeydoke. I'll make it bigger- that's strange though, I didn't change font size, just made it "Times New Roman" (more like "TMS RMN" if anyone here is old enough to remember OS/2) as I prefer to read bookfonts, and thought it would be MORE legible.

Apologies.

Hey🙂

I'd have to go for the CV 50/1.5 Nokton, simply because it's the only one I've used. 🙂 Have no real desire to get anything else.

ManGo

I'm with Manolo on this one for the exact reason, adding that the CV 50/1.5 Nokton is big (compared to my 35/2.5), fast and sweet to use. Generally I like fast lenses. 🙂

aizan's Georgia (size 3) and JD's Times are both clean and legible on my Mac 20" LCD monitor and the Safari browser, though I agree with Frank that the Times is on the small side.

If chug's avatar wasn't so cool I would have to throw a penalty flag on him for trying to get this thread back On Topic.

Chug weren't the really old Canon lenses manufactured to a slightly different spec and not fully LTM compatible? Real early versions of this lens may have this problem. I will have to look it up, There is a year that Canon fixed this, 1951 or something like that.

hehe 🙂 I have no idea about old lenses. A mate found one on ebay so I thought I might enquire to see if it would work. Just doing a bit of research on 50mm lenses while I save my money up for one 🙂

Cheers
