This picture is almost perfectly composed. Its overall proportions, about 1.48 over 1, suggest that it was cropped slightly from a 3/2 image. The line dividing negative and positive space, so stark here, creates roughly the same proportion, about a 6/4 split. The only other line suggested in the image, the diagonal running down from the dune grasses, along the pails, joining the two girls, etc, divides the image roughly in the same proportion and that line is suggested by several other major elements in the picture, such as the tilt of her head and the p osition of her feet. So along with the image's gorgeous colors and its evocation of childhood and partenhood and summer and joy, there is a mathematical harmony underlying the whole thing. It's a great photograph.

The last comment on this one from David Van Sluis was from Mlehrman proposing it be put in this thread here. I agree.

"Farmington to Gallup in the middle of the summer. Just too damn hot. At times like this on long empty stretches of road, it's time to shoot. Set focus at infinity, aperture to f/11, set the camera on the steering wheel and point straight ahead."
I like road trip photos like this.. the endless road in the vast landscape.
