Formal 12/11/07:
The comments, I feel, are well worth re-reading.

In DUBLIN? My God - glancing at the thumbnail I thought this was one of the pictures we used to see from the FSU in the 90s. I would generally endorse the "don't shoot homeless people" rule, understood in the broadest sense. Too often it's an excuse for easy posturing or rank exploitation. This is a complete exception. The absence of faces underlines the absolute indifference of the world to this woman's private agony. The complete lack of sentimentality in treatment is masterly, whilst the laden shopper's bags speak more about our age than shelves of books or hours of TV pundits. I don't think a picture has ever made me so angry. I hope everyone who sees this will burn it in their hearts.

I totally agree with Jockos words. The absence of faces makes the picture a universal illustration of the total loss of hope.

As Jocko and petronius have already commented, the bags full of 'things' and the woman.... There's something to think about as people indebt themselves buying things which people may or may not want to try and bring happiness when, I suppose, giving happiness could be so much easier.

Beyond his many talents, Formal has a unique one of converting the "banal" social issues into special and authentic flags of artistic and human protest. Formal manages to touch both sides of the spectrum with equal strength, form and contents. Very very unusual.
