What is your recommendation for a large backpack for traveling?
Currently I have the Medium Tenba rolling backpack: http://www.tenba.com/Products/Shooto...ium-Black.aspx
The problem is that it is not comfortable to have it on your back. It is more a rolling back. I would have something which I can carry on my back for an hour without killing me. I shoot a lot of destination weddings and the way I carry my gear is very important.
I want a backpack, which is:
- large
- fits into most airplanes bag compartment
- waterproof, and
- durable.
It doesn't have to have wheels.
Can you recommend me anything?

I use the large convertible pack from Rick Steves. It fits in overhead compartments, and has a decent set of shoulder straps which can be hidden behind a panel when not needed. It's got useful compartments, and is big enough to take clothing and stuff for a three-week trip (I assume that you follow standard "travel light" procedures). It's well made. And it's only $100. I use mine any time I take a trip of a week or more. Here's a link to the website:

dakine sequence is big and has good shoulder and waist straps. i've never worn it for an hour but i would imagine it's as comfortable as anything else out there. it's not waterproof but comes with a rain cover. it's rear entry (can only access gear if it's not on your back) which is good for security if that's any concern.

I have a Dakine Sequence and a Kinesis Gear Journeyman backpack.
Both are comfortable.
The Sequence has a removable zip-up inner bag where you store the lenses. The Kgear is modular, so you can attach/detach whatever modular attachment you can buy from kgear.com.
So, I'd say, if you just want to transport camera gear, the Dakine would be a good choice; if you want to transport gear plus other things, then the Kgear gets my vote.

cannot recommend any brand, but for economy option: army surplus gear sold used and new. not that pretty nor trendy colors, but very robust gear that wont break easily.

It doesn't have to be a fancy camera backpack, does it? Those are certainly functional, but quite expensive.
For the a lower price you can get a top-of-the line backpack designed for hiking or mountaineering, a big daypack rather than overnighting. I really love my Deuter for comfort, fit and design. The Deuter Futura is $140. You can then add a padded camera insert to keep lenses separate, and have plenty of room left over for a roll of clothes, toiletries, rain-gear, food package, etc.
