Hey guys,

I was wondering, I know a few of you are, but how many of you guys and girls are bikers? It seems an image in my head a number of RFF members are actually into their motorbikes. Maybe its something about the down and dirty mechanical hands-on thing?

Anyways how many of you are bikers, specifically in the UK?

Also, I got it in my head that once I have a job, rather than save for a car, I may as well go for a motorbike. Anything someone young and un-initiated should know? My next door neighbour only uses his in the summer due to the weather in the UK, so I guess thats a factor, right?

I have a Fazer thou, I use it about 8 mnths of the year, most days. When the days start getting really short and/or the gritters come out, I give up. I don't mind riding in the dark, and the Fazer has fantastic headlights, but combine that with greasy roads and freezing weather and it stops becoming fun.

Hmmm. I'm 42 and at the age where I've done everything (almost) except ride mortorcycles. La thanatosse caught me reading a motorbike mag the other day and gave me a scowl and some lip, not necessarily in that order.

But I figure - if she's not going to let me spend money on a Goldwing, she'll let me spend it on GAS. Comme si comme ca.

- only ride what you can put back up when you drop it
- you ride like you sit

is that why I've been lazily looking through all the choppers on 'bay? :D

Well, I ride my BMW R850R year round, although I've been ribbed before in this forum for admitting to heated grips! I have to admit that I bought the beemer specifically to get away from too much of the 'down and dirty mechanical hands-on thing' of previous bikes. Roland - can you really pick up a Fatboy (surely the worst EVER name for a bike!) single handed??

Would think he'd probably need both hands.

Dropped my thou once, managed just to pick it up, but muscles I didn't know I even had hurt for days after. I picked her up with my back turned turned to her, kinda lift and push back at the same time.

BMW boxer? Mmmm been looking thoughtfully at those. I guess maybe I'm showing signs of getting on a bit.

Thanks for the advice ManGo, I'll keep that in mind... I'm currently weighing up the cost of motorbikes, and its not looking good!

I gave up riding after I had a child that was disabled. I figured I'd better stick around awhile. It's good to ride while your young. Not too many people are depending on you should something bad happen. They don't call them donorcycles for nothing.

Yep, I'm a rider. 4 wheels move the body, 2 wheels move the soul/spirit.

Being a rider is a bit like being a samurai in the old days of Japan. Samurai were brave warriors unafraid of death. If you ride a bike, you have to be able to say, "Today is a fine day to die."

I've got photos of my bikes here in my gallery. Please follow the link.

Thats right, always been a biker. Still into MotoGP and Moto-x. Have owned any and every type of bike at one point. Current street ride is a KTM 640SMC and off road is KTM 525 EXC, and i'll always keep my trusty 74 Honda trail 90. Nothing better than sunday rides in SoCal.

When I was 19 y.o., to be cool a young man needed a fast motorcycle and an expensive camera...40 years later I'm still working on it. Left is my first, a Ducati 90, right is the latest, a 1984 Honda Nighthawk S.

I'm not a biker but was just in Sturgis, South Dakota and apparently, this is THE place for 2 wheelers every August. The entire area is also great for photogs any time of year.

Got any shots to share?

I'm still enroute back to Texas with several rolls of xposed film from the Black Hills region anxious to be processed and scanned. (No Harley shots but lots of scenery and wildlife) Stay tuned .

I'm currently riding a ZX 10, but have ridden many others over the years. In 20 years and a few million miles of road-biking, I've never had even a minor accident. Break-downs are another story.

I also enjoy bicycling, and just finished rebuilding an old Bianchi I picked up for $5 at a local recycler. Speed is relative.

I rode a Honda Helix scooter (a 250cc four-stroke) for many years. It had a huge trunk, a big comfortable seat for two, and would go over 70mph. The transmission was a belt-drive variator, so no clutch and no gears. A comfortable low seating position, the long wheelbase, and a big windshield made for a very comfortable ride for long distances. Motorcycle riders all make fun of you, and think it is a ridiculous machine. Who cares. I took mine on several long trips...the longest being a 6000 mile tour of the USA. Tent, clothes, sleeping bag, provisions, cameras...they all fit easily into and onto the big scooter.

These days I get around on a touring bicycle. There's a joy in getting off the mainstream gerbil grid, circumventing vehicle inspection, registration, insurance, mechanics, taxes, tickets and police, and never having to stop at a gas station. I have panniers, and a trailer if necessary, so I can transport a lot o' stuff on the bicycle.
