There is that ongoing thread titled "you're how old?", and maybe one other about age.

I actually found the thread about what is your real job much more compelling. Heck as far as I know, everyone ages.

Yeah, but I don't have to like it! :(

I never thought I would see the day when I could no longer pass for 49. :(

What really annoys me, and I know this is just a vanity thing, is when people like ticket booth people ask if I'm a "senior", as I do now qualify for some senior discounts. I consider myself to be thrifty, but I think it's worth the extra buck not to be reminded of the fact. :(

Hey, if "60 is the new 40", I'm still in my 30s, right? :)

What's the point?
-of lying about it
-of this whole poll

I can see not putting an accurate birthdate if you're concerned about identity theft. I know some women from the Caribbean islands who make a huge deal about hiding their age. This is even after knowing them for 15 years, and they have 25 year old children!

I'm in denial too, anything with "Saga" on it goes straight in the bin ... be it cheaper or no

Three things annoy me about getting older -
1. Your eyesight goes
2. Your memory goes
3. buggered if I can recall number 3.

That's my real face (in my avatar), and Chris is my real name, but I can't see the point in putting out any more personal information about me in this day and age, when identity theft is a real issue.

i filled in the truth.
i never fool myself in thinking that
somebody cares enough to spend more than 1 second at anything i do/say.

Ok so this I why I started the poll. I don't recall ever taking the trouble to select my correct date of birth when signing up to a forum.

( Never considered it lying but also never considered that it was anyone on a forums business what my DOB is. And besides you can, and most people do, hide it from visibility so the only use it can be is to forum owners using it to determine the demographic of members. )

But what prompted the poll was the "Happy Birthday" messages that I get in my email and see on forums and it just amused me that for those of us who don't use our correct DOB, we get birthday greetings right throughout the year from all the forums we registered at and have to play along with it when people on the forums post messages about it. So I wondered how many other people do the same. It's just a pity that a couple of people decided to turn it into a poll about lying. But I guess I asked for that by using the word honesty in the thread title. Ah well, we live and learn.

As I may have said before (sorry if I'm repeating myself; happens when you get old), my Nikon S2 is about three years older than I am but the camera is in much better shape.

I use my real birthday. Besides, I look young for my age. I've had people knock up to 15 years off real age. Unless I do a self portrait, you'll have to take my word for it. :D

Since it isn't under the Screen name, I'll be 40....er...50 in November.

+1

My bank and insurance use birth dates to identify people associated with accounts, and if you want to find me, you can email me, plus I think more than a few people can tell who I am.

Google yourself , and you find how much excess information is out there, including a comment on a camera long out of production from about 20 years ago which I made -- on Rec Photo?

More a matter of putting out tmi, and as my ATM was just skimmed, as was my credit card last year, along with other runs by folks who have nothing better to do than try to steal from my accounts, I see no reason to post month, day and year on a forum open to everyone and searchable by all.

I suppose if I put a current photo out there, fewer people would want my identity. ;-)

Regards, John, --which may or may not be the name associated with the birthday on RFF, or any other forum. ;-)

This is about as inane a thread as it's possible to imagine on RFF, but it's not the only one. Some people seem to think a photographic forum is a suitable place for this but I think Twitter or Facebook is the proper place to bury it.

I have no secrets. I personally assign less significance to anyone who hides behind web anonymity.

I am 67, born November 21, 1943
I go by Bob Michaels although my legal name is Robert K. Michaels, Jr.
I live in Apopka FL in the US
my website is www.BobMichaels.org
My e-mail address is Bob@BobMichaels.org

Some work with Google will disclose all of that. Plus my street address and phone numbers. I have no delusions that those are secrets.

Do I get more credibility than "CoolLeicaDude" of unknown age and whose location something nonsensical that he thinks witty? Up to you but I am hoping so.

No, my avatar is not me. I am not memorable looking at all. It is a friend, Curtis Robinson. Actually I only have 2 photos of me taken in the last 8 years. Both on my website. Although the nude self portrait is not identified.

I like being an adult of 51 years of age. I can buy what I like, sell it, go to bed at the time I feel like, eat what I want when I want it, and do as I please when I want it too.

Also, like Gary, some people think I look younger than my age and when they find out (because I tell them), they look very frankly and honestly surprised.

Hence, I used my real DOB here. :)

I think it's important we respect other's choices here without denigrating those who prefer to remain anonymous.

To add to my earlier comment, I just had to ring my bank to reset a password for internet transfer of funds. It took less than one minute, and the girl required only that I quote my full name, home address and mobile phone number of record. It's a little frightening sometimes how easy that would be for another person to do if they got hold of an old account statement giving the account number and even just my name. Yes, I'll stick to being just a little cautious thanks!

That's way too simple for me. To change a password my bank requires me to attend in person and produce ID before resetting...
