🙂 you do know that it is a free world, well here anyway, I have my opinion you have yours,if you like B&W wonderful. That there are other aspects to photography is great. I like what colour does to me, it lifts me, it makes me wonder at nature and the mgnificent world we live in. Now tell me that the space shots of earth & the horn of africa does not move you,the blues just marvellous. Close your eyes! Now imagine them in black and white. love you too jack

Well there Jack, it took you 25 posts to get to the only truth in this thread. Everything is just an opinion, and every opinion only has to be correct to it's holder. So, it would do you and everyone else well to remember this and care less about messing with others' opinions.

🙂 Mate are you refering to the opening thread or my reply to someone.I started the thread to get opinions,I did not start it to fight a war. There are many here who are my superiors in knowledge and interests,if you can say what you need in 10 words, dont use 50.B&W reminds me of the news at the movies post war of, the hosing out of tail gunners of bombers and all the harsh times until the 50s. The statement why bother is a reminder to me of those times. I remember the HASSALBLAD photos of earth from space and the great blues, I remember the blue mountains west of Sydney and being able to record the haziness in colour. The unique greens wonderful.I will admit to me B&W photos are clinically great`the lines sharp but no oomph regards Jack
I use both...why not? They both work equally as well. Open your mind...

Millions if not billions of photographs have been taken. Many are very similar to each other. So why do any of us still bother taking photographs?

I don't think he's trolling ... expressing an opinion somewhat forcefully but that's all IMO.
As for black and white it can create a mood that would be difficult to express with colour a lot of the time.

GOLD Aussie humour - jeez i larfed. And for our OS friends the OP was culturally just an Aussie calling a shovel a shovel.. don' tthink it was meant come across so harsh.
And Jack does celebrate moments where colour can be sublime, and he made me think of the many blues in a glacier or iceberg.
It really is down to personal taste. Me - I like both mono and colour, but haven't come close to achieving the standard I see in others work here. Never mind, I enjoy the learning.

🙂 as I have said elsewhere wonderful photo,clear lines great depth. But let me ask you in a few years time what was the colour of the ladies top? was it a great maroon or an elegant blue, her hair was it that wonderful silvery grey or just grey, the sheet of timber did it have the wonderful sheen of silky oak or a dull cream of 3 ply? All these things to me and only to me mean a memory. regards JackI enjoy shooting black and white. I don't find this dark/depressing/grainy/etc. I've had the opposite statement thrown at some of my recent results, that it is too clean and lacks character.
Beyond liking black and white, color is both a hassle and doesn't really fit how I see right now.

That seems totally reasonable to me. If B&W reminds you of harsh times, then colour is for you.
B&W reminds me of pictures of my grandparents in good times, so I like it. That said, I predominantly use colour, probably because good B&W takes a skill I don't have yet.

I consider myself lucky that I can connect with beautiful colour and black & white photography in a positive way. They are two sides of the same coin for me.
OK, I think we all get that you don't like black and white. We all have our own tastes on various genres and (need I say) the films, or digital media and equipment we like to use. Your opinion is as legitimate as other members', even if it is likely to be in the minority in this forum.
But you use words like "ugly, "awful" and "depressing". What are you trying to achieve by starting the discussion? If it is a genuine understanding of why people prefer black and white—fair enough—I doubt you would find a finer site on all the web in which to engage in intelligent discussion of the issue. But it seems fairly clear you're rigidly set in your opinion of black and white—and you've summarily dismissed another member's efforts (in good faith, as far as I can see) to elaborate on the question you asked, as "garbage"—so I don't understand what you really hope to achieve, by asking your question, if you're not open to the answers people give you? And at best, your response to the reply I referred to above comes across as somewhat churlish; at worst, rather rude. Neither of which, will get you very far on this site...manners cost nothing, and matter here (they matter nearly everywhere, actually, but that is another topic for another time).
