Absolutely opposite here. The paint is much slipperier in my hand, especially once glove weather arrives. But in the end I'd much rather shoot with a slippery M than a DSLR! :)

Do you know the time difference between rewinding film in an M6 and in a MP?

Because of this I've even seen people buy a rewind crank for the MP..

I do indeed. I rarely am in situations that it matters, in fact can't think of one I remember. I actually got the angled RW knob on the 2 I ordered as it makes rewinding with the frankenfinder on far easier. The rewind cranks are OK, equally fiddly to the M4 style. I actually prefer the MP type knob when shooting finderless or flashless. Clumsy fingers here.
 
Agreed; I prefer my M2 crankless... Also, as someone well-known reportedly said, in effect, there are no picture opportunities between rolls anyway. :)

Easily amazed I see.

I imagine the few extra seconds to rewind an MP is no more significant than the shots lost due to the flare from the M6 VF. And do you know the time difference between loading an M6 and a Bessa?

My M3 came with a rewind lever - it must be in a drawer somewhere.

I think the black paint on the modern leicas is a bit thin - brassing happens too quickly and I've grown to find it a bit tacky looking. Conversely I really like the way the black chrome 'dull's' and goes silver-ish with wear. I just like things that wear subtly - the brass showing under the black paint versions just isn't as subtle for my tastes.

M9 is a LOT tougher than MP. My ideal would be the gloss of an MP with the durability of an M9 -- but at this point, it does start getting a bit precious and overly finicky to discuss exactly what you'd like.

The production manager at Leica hates the shiny black finish on MPs as it shows even the tiniest mark.

One can only contemplate all the things we'll never see that weren't shot before the M4 made rewinding so fast. Or all those perfect moments we missed before motor drives allowed us 8 frames per second...

I think I like it as it looks more like a tool finish, especially 'worn-in', if you'll pardon my geeking out. ;)

By coincidence I e-mailed Leica last week if they can do the conversion, and yes, you just send your MP camera to them and they get back to you with a price quote. I'm also one of the few people who's not a fan of black paint finishes. I got a used silver chrome MP and once I have the funds in 2-3 years I'll ask Leica to change it to a black chrome finish.

Very interesting ! When I had a silver-chrome MP (2007) I wanted to have it changed to either BP or black-chrome and Leica (Japan) responded that such a conversion is absolutely out of question ...

Which type of black-chrome ? Applied to brass (M4, M4-2, M4-P, M5) or zink (M6, M6TTL), or the new process as used for the brass top plates of M7 and MP ( a la carte) ? ( there were actually two different plating procedures in case of the M7. From early M7 one can literally wipe the black chrome of and Leica changed a couple of these early top-plates free of charge)
 
I own a BP MP; an M8.2 BP; and three M6s in black chrome. I feel the black chrome is more business-like. I believe I prefer it, now that the novelty of BP is wearing off. I had DAG change the winding lever to the straight metal type, and install the VF upgrade, on one M6. Now it is functionally an MP!

Sending in my m6 after the new year to have these done, still cheaper then an MP!

Sure Roger, I have seen many M4-p, M6 in black chrome worn out. I can replicate the same black chrome by leaving the nickel layer untouch and paint it over with black SATIN ( not semigloss black) then it'll look undistinguishable with the real black chrome one. Cheers.

The main office seems much more open to playing around for us!
