i woke up this morning and was casually looking through the camera listings on craigslist when i stumbled across an ad for a black m3 with three lenses for $2100!
i called the guy and raced over to his house with the money. it is real and it's on the list!
it came with a black 50mm summicron, a 35mm summaron with finder and a canadian leitz 90mm summicron. he also had the box, manuals mr meter and a few other items.
he said it was his grandfathers camera and he was selling it to buy a dslr.
i felt a little weird about buying it so cheap, one recently sold on ebay with a 50mm 'lux for $15k, but i got over it!
i don't mean to brag, but i thought if anyone would get it, people on this list would...my wife keeps asking me what i need another camera for!

The best camera is one that still works!
I think I need to sit down, I feel faint.
Congratulations ... things like this do happen but rarely these days!

You are my new hero!
There would be an ethical problem about buying something for much less than it's worth if it was the original owner's poor widow without enough money for food, but in this case, the seller has set the price, advertized it for sale, and is going to use the money to buy a dSLR ...

it's in much better condition than the picture shows. the brass is just worn through in all of the appropriate places. there are two or three small pieces of leatherette missing. the viewfinder is beautiful and the rangefinder seems to be aligned and working. all of the glass is perfect with a little wear on the barrel of the 50.
i still can't get over what i just bought! i actually start to tremble when i think about it. my wife is excited for me, but she keeps joking that i'm more excited about this than our son who is due in two weeks.
what a day! i'll borrow my neighbors digital camera after dinner tonight and post some better pictures.

Sell it and buy a chrome M3, a chrome 50, and a chrome 35. Exact same functionality, and you'll have enough money left ove to last your film habit through the next century.

I agree with Erik. But put the surplus into your child's university education fund. You wife will be even more supportive of your photo hobby/endeavours!

Insane! I constantly scour the local ads for stuff, but not being well versed in the Leicas I generally have no clue what I am looking at. Congrats on the nice find.

Very nice! 1964 was a very good year for M3s, esp. black ones.

What a terrific find. You might give some consideration to what FrankS has said but I know that parting with such a find would be tremendously difficult. It would be for me at least especially since my kids are finished university.

In the terminology of the Olympus OM list, this would qualify as a nuclear FANG!

yeah, i have to figure out a way to replace the money in our checking account. i have several other cameras, including an m2 and an m3, but i really want to keep this thing. i've had cameras like this before and sold them and always regretted it. i was thinking about selling the 35mm and the 90mm to cover some of what i spent today, but again i'd really like to keep them. maybe i'll sell my chrome m3...i guess i'll give it some time and make a decision after the adrenalin wears off...
Hoping you find a way to keep it.
