A while back I was able to pick up one of these and I tell ya - it's a super lens - much lighter and easier to use than a chrome version (I used to have one, but sold it cause it was too heavy). And of course it has a lovely signature of a Sonnar. Here are a few pics on RD1S from a local festival:

It is certainly worth trading up if you value the look of the chrome one. The lighter weight of the black version makes a world of difference in actual use.

Incidentally, this lens is, as far as I know, the most compact RF lens available in its focal length class.

Thats right - Memphis at first borrowed it and later bought it. And I missed the look It gave my photos, so I decided to track down a black one. Took a while, but now I have TWO black LTM Nikkors 85mm. hehe.

I have the chrome lens in S-Mount, Contax Mount, and LTM. Go use the Canon 85/2 and type I Summicron 90/2. Pick up the chrome lens. It's light...

I would love to find a Black 8.5cm F2, but use the chrome one a lot. I also have the 10.5cm f2.5 which is slightly sharper, and only came in black. I have it in LTM, S-Mount, Contax ount, and F-Mount.

I used to have Nikkor 10.5cm in LTM and liked it a lot, but ever since I got a black Nikkor 8.5cm LTM - I sold it as I much prefer size/handling of latter. For those longer needs I also have a Nikkor LTM 13.5cm black. I even almost got a Nikkor LTM 8.5cm/1.4 or is it 1.5? but it reminded me of 10.5cm Nikkor too much in it's size, so f2 seems like a perfect solution for me.

George,

These are very nice. The subject pops out nicely from the background...

Did you ever compare the nikon 85 f/2 with other 85/90 lenses at f/2 or f/2.8 ?

[EDIT] I would also love to have your opinion on the Nikkor VS the Hex at 2.8...THANKS!

I have canon 85/2 (chrome, 600gr) and the background pops up in my photos too. I believe due to sonnar design and being a telephoto lens? Canon is damn sharp at f4!

(as sharp as a summicron I bet)

I have a canon f/1.9 (black), and although it's a very good lens, I have tested it against a summicron at f/2, and the cron is slightly better (sharper).
I seem to remember that it's a planar related design, and not a tele lens (the f/1.8 is a tele)

The Canon is Planar-based. The pre-asph Summicron v3 is an Ernostar, closer in design to the Nikkor than the Canon or, say, earlier Summicrons.

Everybody knows I love my black 85/2 🙂 Shown many of my shots before. This thread is motivating me to use it again ....

please correct me if I'm wrong, you like shooting landscapes with your long FLs. I was wondering if you can discern any "character" in a landscape shot at infinity?
or is the most important thing for such a use the sheer lens sharpness?

Good question. Not sure. Probably the min. aperture I need for corner 2 corner high resolution is the most important; none of my teles have significant distortion. The v3 Summicron at f2.8 and up, and the M-Rokkor, f4 and up are probably my landscape favorites. The Rokkor is totally underrated, IMO, incredibly sharp and small (and therefore great on tripod).

I just put down money on a chrome 8.5cm nikkor at my local shop. I was on the fence about it until I got on flickr and saw some samples, I fell in love with that look last night.

Hi,
Sorry, was away a while, so didnt see your question.
Nikkor 85/2 vs Hex 90/2.8 - well, I like both. They do have somewhat similar look - Sonnar vs Ernostar. I like Hex for faster focus - shorter focus throw. I did like Hex much better when I had Chrome Nikkor due to weight. Now, with the Black Nikkor - weight difference is not that significant to me.
And of course I love Nikkor for the F2! Sine I got this Black Nikkor I hardly ever use Hex. Even was thinking to sell it, but still not sure.

I prefer the 75mm/1.4 Summilux over all of my tele lenses. I sold the [chrome] Nikkor 85/2and the [chrome] Canon 85/1.9. The 105/2.5 Nikkor is an amazing lens by any standard.

I just love how these lenses handle, and their IQ...
