I've been experimenting painting a couple of md top plates today and have managed to get a couple of nice results however I would like to ask a question or two.
Anyone who has an original black paint M3 or M4? What does the paint look like? ok i've seen them in photos but is it a matt finish like the M6 black chrome say or is it more like a recent MP's.
I've managed to do a great black paint finish which basically looks identical to an M6 I have and I've nearly finished a gloss black one which does look very glossy when sat next to the MP. thanks all

The finish on my M4 is not super glossy. But it is certainly much glossier than the finish on my M6. The black paint finish is a deeper black if that makes any sense. It's difficult to describe.

Thanks Marc,
I just found some quite decent pics on the Schouten select site and the only way I can really judge the finish is by the amount and sharpness of reflections in the paint!
Once I've perfected the finish I will post some pics

I look forward to seeing them. I would have posted a side-by-side picture of the two cameras for you, but my M6 is currently visiting Gerry Smith.

Maybe can you tell us what paints are you experimenting? I used for my M4-P a tamiya semi gloss acrylic spray can, on a clear tamiya metal primer.

The result was ok, but clearly not glossy enough. I polished the final layer with my bare fingers... My black paint cam is ugly right, but the original black paint leitz did on their Ms lead to a same state of ugliness. I feel comfortable banging and using this M4P because it will only add some 'cachet', while Bob would probably not with his original black paint M3. Wonderful camera and lens Bob!

Here are a couple of pics of my original black paint M4. I would describe it as slightly more glossy than satin gloss, if that makes sense. I haven't compared it to a new MP side by side, but I think they are slightly more glossy.
Good luck with the paint job.
Jacob

Jacob, thx, that 2nd photo shows quite clearly how glossy it is in the reflection of the lens. Actually looks more glossy than my MP.
pics up of the MD top plates coming soon, honest:D

Here is my first attempts. I've always fancied having a go and thought whilst I'm off with a bad back might as well try. The hardest bit is getting a smooth glossy finish as i'm sure any paint sprayers here will tell us. I think with cans you are limited somewhat to the finish possible so I'm going to get a little modellers spray gun and give that a go. The more matt finish came out great from the can though but is for me just a little too matt. It's actually near identical to black chrome finish.
Paint used so far
Motip satin black 16594
Motip gloss black
both non acrylic and I used a sticker paint base, similar to an etch primer I suppose. Ovened at 170 deg for an hour.
If any one else has any ideas post them up please

I think you did an outstanding job, especially for a first few attempts, and you are certainly on the right track. They look very nice just as they are.

Do you de-chrome first nobbylon? I ask because I have a black painted M2 and the paint comes off rather easily - I don't care but you might.

Mmm... I'm thinking ... I may have got it off you! :)

George S, thx.
Kully, there was no need to de chrome as I just bought a couple of bare brass tops to practice on and perfect the technique before I actually do a camera.

bob, your camera rules.

it's actually in a safe deposit box at the bank, it's just too valuable to risk losing to theft or my own forgetfulness. i decided to put it in storage when the wrist strap on my m2 broke a few weeks ago and it came within a couple of inches of tumbling into the bay! i have another m3, so i don't miss it much.
