I remember that. The shop was Kitamura Camera in Shinjuku and iirc the camera was priced around one million yen (about USD $6,640 at the current exchange rate), which seemed like crazy money back then. Even crazier to think the price would have been much higher if the shop had noticed it was a Nikon S2E.
Was it an S2E? serial number?

Apparently a total of 32 Nikon S2E were manufactured in the fall of 1957, concurrent with the first black Nikon SPs set up for motor drives. They did not precede the Nikon SP, and their motors were the same as the motors that shipped with black SPs. The two or three S2s that were shown with motors the previous spring were prototypes and none have ever shown up on the current market (at least not yet).
Rare and super collectible !

Dymo tape label has same name as a user on this thread.
Yep that’s me. I’m looking for a black SP because I use 28 and 35 lenses. If I can’t find someone to trade with, I figure I can use the cash to get an SP limited.

I don’t use a 50mm that much often. Seems like a waste not using the S2 VF.

Edit: nice to you guys are on the Nikon RF faceboom group as well!

The Nikon rangefinder lenses fit the Zeiss rangefinder cameras very well, even the extremely rare working Contax 1 cameras.

I found a collector who was willing to do a straight swap so I went for it. The SP below has heavy brassing and patina but I like it that way since I’m a user.

I have to say now that I’m a convert of the SP’s viewfinder. This particular camera was overhauled and the viewfinder is nice and bright including the patch and double image.

There was a TV Pawn Stars episode where Bob Rotoloni pretends to sell or pawn a black paint Nikon S2.
