bnib m8

Rumor has it that Leica might release stuff late June. Maybe. If there's an M9.2 in the offering then original M9s could drop in price. For sure original M9 owners will bore of their out-of-date machines and spring for a new one. Post June could be a wonderful time to pick up a 2nd hand M9.

where did that rumour come from?

be nice if it were true...

i'd go M9.2 only if they fix the software a bit. there is nothing more in this camera that i would need except the better software.
for instance today i took a few pictures and they were never writen on the card, i tried again and the same thing happened, so i formated the card with overwrite and it worked fine. It didn't really bother me but i would rather a 5k camera didn't have glitches like that. not really glitches, more like card-camera cooperation fail. And i only use sandisk ultra+extreme cards. which are probably fake because i got them from a fail dealer. 😡😡. i officially talk to much.

Well, after considering Olsen's cautions about the Epson, I had no choice. After all, I trust you guys implicitly. Or at least I trust you sort of. I scored an M8.2 for $3400. Should be here mid-week. Now to get those damned filters.

Maybe if you kept the contacts of your SD cards clean?

Except for that there is a wast difference between RD-1's 1,5 and M8's 1,33 crop factor, the M8 is a far more reliable. - Except for this Red Line Issue. 'All' the 2.hand M8s' on the Norwegian 2.hand market have been to Solms for repair (pixel remapping device installed). Then they will work fine for many years. The rest of the camera has proven to be very reliable. The 2.hand M8s out there are better than they were new!

I have tried to buy a decent (mind you) RD-1 for years. - I started this process even before I bought my M8 back in 2006. Now I have given up, though. I have looked seriously at 5 units 2.hand RD-1 for sale here in Norway and Sweden over the years. All of them had some kind of service issue or malfunction. From framelines all bungled to lcd screens not wroking. Having in mind that Epson don't market the RD-1 here in Norway and have no service system organised. You are on your own. Several of the Epson RD-1 sellers was so pissed off by Epson that they had promised themselves that they should 'never buy a Epson product again'.

The Epson RD-1 is one of the most charming cameras launched in the last 10 years. A major break through as a product idea. But Epson did nothing - absolutely nothing, to follow up on this success. Nor to follow up their original RD-1 customers. What a shame! Nor were the product quality up to that of Leica.

Leica has a good service system (but slow, some say), and Leica is known for sticking to their customers, and be reasonable regarding serivice cost. Several 2.hand buyers of M8 have had their cameras Red Line Fixed for free.

2.hand Rd-1s are dead fishes in the water, which the supplier has given up on. While 2. hand M8s are good cameras with a long life in front of them, with full backup from the producer.

That choice is an easy one.

I had three RD-1s - kept selling them and decided I wanted one again. 1 of them had the shutter fail and it was fixed in about a week by Epson under warranty. My only M8 had the LCD turn brown, Leica fixed in a month or so under warranty.

I always felt that the M8 was more reliable and solid though, even though my personal failure rate was 33% for Epson and 100% for the M8!

I sold my M8 when I got an M9 and kept my R-D1. Charming is the right word for it. And, thankfully, I pulled the trigger last summmer when the Dollar/Euro rate was favorable for me and I saved about $1400 or so buying from Austria.

The only problem that I've ever had with SD cards in the M8 is one that I used with the factory formatting and did not format it using the camera. Took three pictures, they did not flush to the card. My Nikon DSLR also does something similar with its PCMCIA cards. So this is an old lesson learned a long time ago that I should have remembered.

Actually I was less concerned about reliability, and more concerned about the usefulness of the cameras with wide-angle lenses. The Leica has a 24mm frameline, and the 28mm is (I think) a bit more visible for eyeglass wearers. And the effective field is a bit wider for each lens, as well.

I quite worrying about high-ISO performance. ISO 640 ought to be enough for most of my shooting.

more Importantly I'm in a creative Rut...not growing
so Its either an m8 or a video cam and making short B^W street 'flicks'
long sigh ...:bang:

hasn't the m4 helped out...?

The M4 is Divine... its just me

it takes me quite a long Time to finish a roll as of Late
not because i am careful or concerned about wasting film
Just Not 'seeing'

perhaps a change of Medium
or take in some gallery exhibits
or some photo books
I need a jump start.... a Ledge to jump from...😱,,,creatively speaking

Helen, one thing that helps, when one is in a rut, is to give yourself a "self-assignment." If we were taking a photo class, the instructor would give the assignment, and we would then go do it. Like, "Pick out a building and photograph it every hour from before sunrise to after sunset." (That was one of my assignments in an architectural photo course.) Or how about picking out a spot and photographing everything that happens there for one hour--or all day. People walking dogs? Couples entering Starbucks?

Actually I guess you should probably do your self assignment with an M8 😀 I just dumped almost my whole Leica R system and bought an M8.2 today! So I really do know exactly what you are talking about . . .

Best,

Rob

I'm not sure about how your creativity flow works Helen but I know with myself that if I'm in your described situation there's a reason for the block and usually it's an external force that has little to do with photography.

I'm currently creatively blocked myself and taking photos that please me is very difficult ... I've also recognised the source of my block though I can't necessarily do much about it at the moment.

Keith is it because your Fuji distributor there is bothering you....Lol.

LOL ... that was good but no!

The whole X100 thing has dropped well off my radar and whatever happens happens and how long it takes is fine as far as I'm concerned.

My priority at the moment is trying establish a source of regular income (job) and that is stressing me a little ... and when I get stressed my photography falls apart for some reason! 😱

A big no.

If you have $4000 to spend, get a Nikon D700 instead.
You'll have spare for a couple of really nice Nikkor primes.
