I've recently evilbay'd my 35mm summicron to someone in taiwan. unfortunately, on my student budget, i can only afford one lens. paypal's holding my fees until april 2nd.

and then i'm buying a 50mm summicron. until that gets delivered, i just have a very expensive paperweight. i've been doing nothing but reading this forum, photographing vicariously through you gents. 🙂

i apologize for this little rant, i'm just so bored 😀

I hope you shipped EMS with signature confirmation. You're at a HUGE risk of a chargeback, and you'll lose both lens AND money.

eBay and PayPal are destroying sellers lately. The risks of being gamed by people who know how to work the system are huge.

Work the system? If he accepted the money through PayPal, sends it with a sig. required and insuranc to a verified address, how can he be at risk? Just curious to know...

That's why Ahmed asked the OP if he sent with signature confirmation.

Even if he did that, couldnt the buyer claim he sent an empty box and still chargeback the money, leaving our poor student lensless and penniless?

I'm a poor student too (working on my Masters degree). I have sold some gear in the last year when I needed money. Never to anyone overseas....too big a risk.

i would assume the weights of the package would have something to do with it.

and i do have signature confirmation and insurance, but unfortunately, i could only claim up to $400. i've read his feedback as a buyer and i haven't seen anything bad. 99% positive out of 900 feedback isn't too bad, and the neg feedback as a seller.

in a worst case scenario, i'll buy an old, cheap lens to hold me off until i could save up for the latest 50mm summicron.

You better hope that your new 50mm Summicron doesn't catch wind of the way you dumped your faithful old 35mm Summicron like that! You'll never hear the end of her catterwalling!

A signature that can be viewed online is really the key to protecting yourself with paypal. I believe $250 is the cutoff on that. If the value is over $250 and you don't get a viewable signature confirmation, you are at the buyer's mercy.

You can buy insurance at the post office. And as long as it is over $200, the post office will get a signature upon delivery. But that signature will not help you in a dispute with Paypal because it cannot be viewed online. You have to go the extra step and pay for the actual signature confirmation service.

Still, Walter, I wouldn't worry too much. You describe a buyer who sounds like a pretty honest member of the ebay community.

Rxmd wrote pretty much what I was going to say - buy yourself an FSU lens and an adapter for the interim period, though I'd suggest a Jupiter-8 as it has a very different 'look' to it.

Most people probably wouldn't notice the difference just by looking at the prints from a Jupiter-8. It's got a great heritage behind it. Mind you, the adapter will cost a fortune as it will have to be a genuine one. You can waste a lot of money on the clones and get very annoyed about it.

Regards, David
