Hi all,

Let's see how I get on at describing this...

Just got my brand new CV 40/1.4 SC in the post. On looking through it at a bright light, I can detect 'something' on an internal surface. Hard to describe, but to me it looks somewhere in between the veins of a leaf and a dense spiderweb tracing across the glass. It's very faint, but it's there.

So...

What is it? And what's it doing on a brand new lens?

Hate to say this, but...sounds like fungus (!?)

Then again, I've never actually seen fungus - I've just heard it described. It could be some strange by-product of a coating process gone wrong...that is, if the particular element was a coated one. With the SC, I'm not sure if that's even true.

I'm sure someone else can give you a better guess. Can you snap a photo of the "effect"?

Cheers,
--joe.

ps. if it's a new lens, i'm sure there's a reputable dealer who'll help you out.

Hard to photograph, as it's not immediately obvious even to look at.

My first suspicion was fungus, but I've only ever seen really obvious fungus, so wasn't too sure.

I bought it from a dealer with a very good rep, although not one I've dealt with myself before now. I'll give them a bell tomorrow and see what the craic is.

Bit disappointed, was hoping to try it out over the weekend...

Thanks all.

Or good times!

What the craic?
Pretty much.

To have good craic is to have a good time, have a laugh.

"What's the craic?" or like in my post: more like "what's happening about...?", "what's the deal with...?"

Craic - Northern irish-ism with many and varied meanings depending on context and inflection 🙂

Sorry for letting it slip in - it was late at night 😀

1. The context sensntive 'babble' fish equivalent in 'american' for craic (pronounced crack - as in pistol report) would be 'weasel words'?

2. I'd been planning on one of these lens.

3. The venacular makes me home sick, so you get two strikes in one message.

Try holding it up and looking through it at an overcast sky, if you can find one over there, the uniform illumination will make it less likely that you’re seeing reflections and the like, I’ve stopped looking for stuff in lenses I frighten myself, too imaginative!

1. Not sure. That wouldn't be my uderstanding of 'weasel words'. Although, in this context... maybe? Not necessarily with the same negative connotations.

2. Me too. A long time coming. This time round, a birthday present from my wife.

3. Sorry 🙂

There's no doubt that it's there. Was looking at it again this morning in daylight - looks almost like the pattern of a snowflake, only not quite so regular. Transparent and not glaringly obvious, but definitely there. You can see it looking through from the front, but also if you look obliquely at the rear element you can see it in there.

I know what you mean about looking in lenses, though.

Either way, it is now on its way back to the dealer.

I'd say if you're not happy with a new item you should return it and let the dealer sort out if there's a problem or not.

And OT, if you go round asking about craic where I live you get to meet some very colourful characters indeed!

If it is really like a snowflake it may only be dust from static electricity. If the coating is a good insulator or the lens is plastic it would not be out of the question.

I can't imagine what the supplier will do... Good luck

I have noted that some of the cv lenses are advertised as aspheric I had wondered how they managed it. My current specs are high refractive plastic, and are near as high as the high refractive glass of the previous specs.

I thought criac was southern Irish, but it is best not to stirr up hornets nests.

how on earth a new lens got fungus I dont know but you describes fungus for sure IMO. Its an organic tracery which looks like something used to be there and was removed like the imprint left from something resembling leaf veins or roots. I have seen this on 30 year old lenses stored in damp garages but never on a new product. How could it have been subjected to humidity etc and had time to develop. Bizarre. All my photo kit is in storage along with my home contents and has been for a year. Fungus was a MAJOR concern of mine and I will be checking everything so, so carefully when I get it back....you've got me bricking myself now...!!!
