bravo rff - the newbie friendly site

Is it too soon to mention the "red menace" of the FSU gear? Or should we just surprise him?
Bluedust ~ Welcome aboard!

GAS ~ Gear Acqusition Syndrome
FSU ~ Former Soviet Union

And yes, it's easy to see you're new here. Your girlfriend is still actually helping you accumulate gear. I remember "back in the day" when my wife use to do that. I wonder where she went?

Yes, beware of the dreaded Red Menace ~ FED Fanatics, Kiev Komrades and others like Rob who lingered too long in ........... The Zark Side!

Three months down the road you'll be like the rest of us... peeking out the window all day looking for your best friend, Comrade Postman, so you can sneak the packages into the house and down in the basement before she sees 'em! And another... and another... wrinkled brown paper and yak hair string stuffed to the back of your sock drawer. The stench.... I mean... aroma of fine Russian leather cases is permanently embedded in your nostrils. And you're constantly encouraging your girlfriend to buy new purses so you can scavenge her old ones into camera covers.

Hang around. These guys know their RFs. It's fun. And just remember, the less food you buy, the more film you can get in the refrigerator.

I am assuming GAS = gear addiction syndrome ?
FSU? no idea

I once got flamed so bad in a digital forum that one member dug up my first post on the forum asking for critique on my first ever photos (of course the photos were terrible) and mocked my efforts.

To be honest I am tired of "this camera has banding when using the flash" and "this camera searchs to much when autofocusing". I want to concentrate on taking photos and not on the technology that stands in between the photo to be taken and the photographer.

I like it here 🙂

I'm kinda new here too but as I uncerstand it:

GAS: Gear Acquisition Syndrome

FSU: Cameras from the Former Soviet Union (e.g. Kievs and Feds)

You are correct that this is a great website to discover a wonderfully odd backwater of photography.

Discovering it has gotten me in deep trouble to the tune (so far - for GAS is never far away) of a Nikon S2 and a companion Bessa R2S (why have one RF when you can have two for the price of - well - two?)!

Welcome.....

This is a great forum, the best hangout on the net for film photography to me, and (dont tell anyone) I dont even own an rf camera yet 😀

That bronica 645 rf sure does look fine though.... 😛

"this camera has banding when using the flash" and "this camera searchs to much when autofocusing"

What on earth are you talking about??????????

😀

Welcome anyway, enough people have already warned you about GAS so I won't add my tale of woe.
However, there's another RFF tradition that you need to comply with; whenever you get a new camera we expect a pic in the "Camera and Coffee" thread!

I didn't know that. Does Jorge send a new membership mail requesting this?
I guess that means I have a few pics to submit.

my view is that there is a level of maturity that is inherent in the decision to use 50 year old cameras.. it involves priorities centered on the photographic experience as well as the ability to capture emotion and depth

any fool can pick up a digital camera and take snapshots.. and many do 🙂 (in fact, some days I'm one of them)

It's not official RFF policy. It's part of RFF lore -- a grassroots thread started by Rich Silfver and continued to this day. Looking forward to seeing your gear in the Camera and Coffee thread.

Gene

A belated welcome!

One way to avoid stress on your household finances is to just focus on one obscure but workable camera system for which there are few extra lenses and whatnot. Something like the Argus C3.

And if we don't drink coffee? Okay to replace with our favorite bevarage instead? Maybe start the antithesis thread, "Cameras and Cheese" 😀

Oh, bluedust, others have answered GAS and FSU (both of which I found out here a few days after agonizingly trying to udnerstand what they were talking about). Another one I never saw before was "CLA" I think it means camera and lens adjustment -- err.. ?

When I get in tonight I will try and get a pic of my RFs (using my canon 20d). I cant wait to develop the shots I took today. At the moment I do not have a film scanner so I may have to print them all.

I was thinking about that too. I so very seldom drink coffee (I don't care for hot drinks for some reason) I've kind of ignored most of that thread.

"Camera And Diet Coke" maybe? 🙂

"Camera And Beer"? 🙂 🙂 🙂

Well that certainly wouldn't help me, I can't stand either of those.. either. How about Milk, cookies, and camera? Or buttermilk and camera? Or, to be politically correct..

"Favorite relaxing beverage of choice and camera" 😀

As long as you call it coffee, anything goes. If you excavate through the thread you'll find some fine cameras alongside some equally fine single-malt scotch ... 😀

[It's nice to be nice to the nice."

who can place that quote?

I have a lot of catching up to do with the coffee and camera thing. Can I just take a photo of the closet? or do all of the cameras need to come out of the closet?

ROFL! A guy I used to work with carried a lunch pail with a thermos bottle which he called "coffee" but everybody (except the bosses) 🙂 {yeah, right} knew that it was something a bit more potent. 🙂 🙂 This was, of course, back in the not so politically correct days. 🙂 🙂

Hmmm,
Maybe we should have a dictinary around here somewhere? I recall reading yaers ago that jargon is a way of reinforcing a sense of community and a way of excluding people who aren't part of that community. I know I'm delighted to see new faces/posters here but I also know I throw the various acronyms around without thinking that not everyone heremight not know what the heck I mean.
Before I started this post, though, I figured i'd write a bunch of 'em down but I could only think of the three we've mentined(FSU, GAS, and CLA).
Is this worth a thread of it's own?

We just lapped the field, it only looks like we are behind. 😀
Odd? well yeah... OK point taken... Backwater? I prefer to think of it as a harbor.
