BREXIT: UK members might want to consider GAS before the June 23 referendum

It's being deliberately starved so that they can make the argument "it's not fit for purpose, we need to bring in private companies".

It's beyond a tragedy that we're heading in that direction.
I'm sure there are all sorts of issues within the NHS, I just think it's important to pinpoint why they're there.

Prescription fees don't apply in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, just England (where I live).

I agree completely that it's a disgrace.

I think it's pretty obvious and unfortunately it's not a British problem only, as also in Italy right now you might cue for weeks for an examination but if you pay something like 80 euros you can get it privately the day after...the fact that annoys me most is that the medical personnel is legally authorised to work both in public and private, so certain doctors are perceiving two salaries and or they are using their public position to get private "customers".

However this is not at the level of the UK, where I was expelled from a GP because I questioned the fact I asked an examination for TSH, T3 and T4 hormones and that the British "threshold" for hyperthyroidism was TS lower than 0.05 ppm (in Europe it's 0.2 ppm), fixed so low in order to say that a substantial amount of patients can be declared "healthy" and not cured by the NHS.

Since then I return home every three or four months for medical checks, but it's not a good living, and that's the reason why I always think about leaving the UK for good.

We certainly are a nation of immigrants, but don't get confused between immigrants who are still entering this country today through the front door...and we are fulfilling our quota...and the "illegal immigrants" arriving by boat on our shores. Now the problem with majority of us here is that we are suckered into believing that it is about multiculturalism, when it ain't....it is just Islam coming in the back door....and because as Australians we have this trust issue with that religion at the moment, we don't want it here. If Europe wants to increase their intake of Muslims, good luck to them.
The Right wing is growing massively here due to this issue, and that's not good either. So you see David, the whole world is in a s**t at the moment. Cheers.

So you consider your antecessors not "illegal immigrants" according to the laws of the local populations? Shall we discuss about what they have done to the Austrial aboriginals? Talking about "illegal immigration" they suffered a lot because of this issue...let's stop this hypocritical reasoning, you are not in the position to patronise about today's illegal immigrants with your past.

Before you vote...

Before you vote...

... think about poor Roger; he may never taste Marmite or marmalade again if the leavers get their way. That assumes he hasn't buried a secret stockpile in the woods...

OTOH, didn't some foreign country ban Marmite despite the free trade agreement? It's all very confusing and we only know what they chose to tell us.

Regards, David ;-)

I'm off to cast my vote now.

I was really hoping that Boris J would become more widely recognised as the unprincipled opportunist that he clearly is, but sadly there are so many ignorant and xenophobic people in this country who are willing to support him.

Banned by Denmark, for containing undeclared Vitamin B12 as an additive (and recently lifted again after the importer paid for the required risk assessment test). The Danish (who, like the UK, love to opt for local regulations outside and beyond the EU legislation) once were the European country with the most lethally colourful food (you could dye T-shirts with Danish sausages), but recently they grew health food conscious and gave themselves the strictest food additive regulations in Europe.

By the way, these changes in the Danish attitude towards food additives illustrate that the common market does not stop you from giving yourself rather fancy local regulations, either way...

So, if you vote to leave an ailing organisation whose main purpose is to make the elite classes rich at the expense of the less well off you're ignorant and xenophobic? I thought that we lived in a democracy where you could have differences of opinion without resorting to name calling but clearly not.

The problem is, as with most democratic actions, that most voters don't have a clue what it's all about and what the consequenses are. So, whatever they vote, it will seldom be the best decision. Maybe people should pass an exam before they are allowed to vote about these very specific subjects 🙂
I don't mind about everybody voting in general elections, thats different imo.

You might have to take that up with the Queen of England.
Our family came legally from Italy to Australia.

Then I recommend you to watch this interesting film:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Girl_in_Australia

Even if the Italian title is much more funny.

Perhaps it will help you sympathising with the "illegal immigrants" as most of the Italian migrants of the post war era were actually "sold" by the Italian government to other countries like Belgium and Germany in exchange of coal and other utilities they lacked.

hmmm. so some of you think political name-calling is a recent development by the ignorant masses? ...

Hi,

It's not just the ignorant masses who have been name calling, in fact the whole tone of this so-called debate (not this one on RFF) but the public one has been abysmally low.

They were ranting about democracy and independence in ways that suggest... well, I'll stop there but saying 'abysmally low' is polite. And the way they went on about independence made me wonder why no one asked if they were planning to leave NATO, Interpol and so on. It would seem the logical next step, given the intensity of the claims.

Apologies for stating the obvious here, but since the reign of IDS, those figures are more unreliable than they have ever been.

The real numbers are significantly higher.

This isn't a pro/anti brexit comment, just that the "official" figures on this subject are wildly fictional.
Almost certainly true. Then again, we don't know how the other countries' figures are fudged either. I certainly find it odd that employment in the UK is reported to be as high as it is.

Cheers,

R.

I certainly find it odd that employment in the UK is reported to be as high as it is.

A couple of good reasons are the growth in part-time jobs and the ever increasing number of people classified as "economically inactive" (ie unemployed people who are not claiming benefits nor actively seeking work).

If the referendum campaign has shown anything, it is how able the politicians are in twisting half truths and lies into Orwellian fact.

Given that the polls indicate a close run thing and that there are only two choices: remain or leave, has anyone thought what would happen if the result was exactly equal? Does someone get to toss a coin to finally decide? This seems to be a weakness with a referendum…

Hi,

We have to start all over again and we are not allowed to stop until we get it right... (And some people will think I'm joking.)
