Brits Ban Cameras on Planes

Can we curb the racial slurs? Why does it always have to be an Arab or a Muslim? Who blew up that building in Oklahoma? Who blew up have of London not so many years ago? Who is killing who anywhere in this world? Not just Arabas or Muslims, right? So, mind your mouths.

Oh I'm sorry. Even the President doesn't mind racial and religious slurs.

From the BBC website:<i>US President George W Bush said the alleged plot was a "stark reminder that this nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom."</i>

OK. I'll shut up now and let the warmongers put more oil on the fire.

My #1 goal when I travel via airplane is not dying on it

I am truly pissed off at the people on this earth who have no problem blowing me and whoever else is on an airplane out of the sky to serve whatever insane purpose they are pursuing.

Twenty-one people were arrested for allegedly planning to blow up over a half-dozen airliners using liquid explosives and detonators that could have been in a key fob, radio or, yes, even a camera. The time to err on the side of caution is now.

The irony is that eventually something is going to get through and people will die on a bus, an airliner or whatever and the people in charge are going to be hammered for not doing more. I don't envy them.

PERMANENT?!!

First thing I asked my dad is whether we were still going on holiday at the end of the month. If I can't take a camera, then there's no chance I can take a 46" lump of wood with metal and urethane attached (longboard/skateboard). If I can't take either there simply is no reason I would want to leave the country.

I'm not risking being blown up if I can't enjoy the two hobbies my life is based around!

There's a difference between "Arabs" and "Islamic fascists." Initial reports are saying those arrested include people of Pakistani decent ... not Arabs.

we will have to show up at the airport naked with only a Zorki 4 in the main luggage bag that will go in the cargo hold.

There's the answer: Everyone flies in the nude, after a body cavity check.

Do wonders for the railroads and bring on the return of ocean liners!

Something I just heard in the TV news is that they believe that some of the planned bombers are still on the loose, so the drastic emergency measures today appear to have been designed specifically to stop active bombers actually at large rather than to stop a general bombing threat. Explosives made from several ingredients carried separately and mixed on board, together with something electronic to detonate it was apparently planned. And it also sounds as if some sort of paper or cardboard material (or something that could be made to resemble it) was involved - they specifically banned books, and are allowing spectacles to be carried providing they are not in cases.

Best,

I'm for the nude part, but cavity check? mmmm...

There's already a flight like that, I think. But I just can't think having the guy next to me taking a nap and then having the .... ::shudder:: never mind.

Getting back to photography....

Bah! 🙂 I guess that I will have to check in a camera in the luggage then. Lets see, I think I should take one I can afford to lose and that is a great travel camera. My Hexar AF fits the bill nicely, it is gathering dust, but I can afford to lose it and it is a great travel camera. Then I buy B&W film on site and ship it home, color film can probably be developed on site. Should it get lost, then I will have to get something cheap but useful on site.

Good thing I did not sell it as I considered...😀

If I were to go on a serious trip, I guess I would need to ship the camera insured to the destination or take my chances with the luggage. But in reality I think a serious trip will most likely be made by car and/or boat if possible.

The really bad thing is if you go on a trip with the intention of taking pictures, and lose the gear on the trip to destination. I can always have an insurance for the things (hopefully), but I doubt I can get compensation for the then sort of worthless plane ticket and wasted time. That is why I never let my gear out of sight when I go on a trip..

The good things are that it will bring an end to traveling with film, worrying about hand inspection and X-rays which tends to upset me every time! 😡, and that I can travel more safely.

I have often wondered why not more planes are blown up, I do not have high confidence with airport security. Cars are a safer way of traveling.

I suppose buying film and processing it at your vacation destination will be better for the local economy of places we visit.

Sure there is. Just check it instead of carrying it on.

re: nude flights -- no thanks -- probably around 95% of people out there, I would strongly prefer not to see naked.

II.

I've met someone so afraid to fly he took a boat from NY to the UK, then train through Europe. His trip was longer than what I'd be able to get away with, but it looks like an answer. Trains are fun, too.

What I don't understand (in a fundamental way) is the chemistry of "several harmless things" coming together to make something as powerful as C4.
I don't believe it. I... I just can't fathom it. How does one carry a "harmless" nitrating agent? A harmless picrating agent?
Someone's taking liberties with the word "harmless."

Brits Ban Cameras on Planes [new development]

Brits Ban Cameras on Planes [new development]

According to The Associated Press... "One [US] official said the suicide attackers planned to use a peroxide-based solution that could ignite when sparked by a camera flash or another electronic device."

Seems like tempers are running a little high here.

I said POTENTIAL attacks on airplanes, did it make me sound like I habitually swallow everything the media or government tell me, hook, line and sinker? No. But for those people who think this terrorism thing is all "hype", well it was barely one year ago when 52 innocent people were killed in London by suicide bombers. Or have we forgotten? One of them was on my train. (Or is someone else going to tell me that this is all a Zionist plot and I'm too close-minded to see the truth? 😉 Still waiting for the video on that one...)

Let's hope the bans are temporary, until things calm down. This is NOT good for anyone, especially not the UK government, the economy, etc. Being a film-user, it would be extremely inconvenient for me not to be able to take my film anywhere. But in the context of recent events, I'd think that ranting about the bans is a little bit close-minded. I can think of a lot more people who will be inconvenienced by not being able to bring other important bits of hand-luggage along, not just cameras.

>>According to a german newspaper (Der Spiegel) the terrorists planned to use a flash as the igniter. That explains why cameras are banned at the moment<<

Camera flash can pack one heckuva whallop. I can see these being banned permanently.

I've decided.. next time I travel.. just so that I can, in fact, say I've "gotten some" recently, I'm going to ask for a strip/body cavity search...

Looking forward to this as it will prepare me for future prostate exams,
Dave

I wouldn't dare put my R-d1 in checked baggage. I'm off to Norway next week and I'm hoping my Leica M6 will be able to stand it.

The main reason I travel abroad by plane is to take photos, there is NO WAY my cameras are going in the hold, especially travelling through Thief Row Airport. So I will boost the holiday industry here, I had too all intents ruled out travel to the US for the forseeable future in any case as have most of my friends. Europe, the train beckons, a far more civilised way to travel anyway!!
