Brits buying stuff from abroad.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies and especially the .gov.uk and the handling fees etc. info.

@tom.w.bm, I've only used ebay, amazon and google (inc. google 'shopping') and looked at brit shop's websites so far. I had been hoping to get the older hoya hmc versions which have been going cheap recently. Trouble is I've missed the boat at 'camera king' as far as yellow and orange go. I did get my green and yellow green from them, but I bought a tamrac stratus 6 bag which I had to return as it's padding was thin etc. and that caused me to miss out on the yellow and orange filter bargains they had at the time. Now brit shops either don't have coloured filters or they have the dearer new ones.

@lynnB, Thanks for the link. unfortunately they don't say if it's multi-coated or not, so I'd be a little reluctant to buy it.

@zuikologist, I could buy a 46mm step up ring, but then the new 49mm or 52mm lens hood would intrude even more into the viewfinder of the Ricoh 500gx that the filters are for.

@andrewmore, I know about srb photographic. I've emailed them in the past about their screw-in mono filters and they told me they are uncoated resin, so that puts me off.

@FrozenInTime, I have just been to the speedgraphic website and I've bookmarked it. Thanks.

I do prefer to buy from brit shops as that usually means the thing reaches me quicker.

As for that idiot Trump, if he really wants to make this country great again, he should start by giving it back to the original inhabitants from which it was stolen. Every since the Indian tribes lost control of the situation, it has been all downhill in my opinion.

I'm assuming that you're an American, since you were saying what Trump should do to make THIS country great again.

As long as I can remember, I have heard guilt-ridden white leftists crying that white people are oh so evil for stealing the Indians' land, and that those awful evil horrible mean white people should have to give it back. Of course, these Social Justice Warriors wouldn't dream of giving THEIR land back and returning to Europe. They meant that OTHER white people should do that.

The truth is that no ethnic group is really native to the places they live now, and every ethnic group is tainted with the stain of horrific violence in the past.

Even the Native Americans are really from northeastern Asia. The Indian tribes fought brutal wars against each other long before the first white man ever set foot here.

The natives in Mexico were tearing the hearts out of living people for their gods, then eating the sacrifice victims. Historians believe that around 100,000 people a year were sacrificed that way in the Aztec Empire and in other areas, like Tlaxcala, where the same religion was practiced.

seany65,

Over the years all of my 39 and 46mm UV and yellow filters have been purchased from London dealers simply by asking if they have any in their secondhand box.

Perhaps I’ve been lucky, but the ones I’ve found have been top quality Hoya, Heliopan or B+W multi-coated, usually at around half of the new price.

The only filter I have had to buy new was a 39mm ND filter.

Another source for cheap filter might be "troc" shops. Don't know the equivalent name in the UK but here they are a chain of second-hand shops. You can bring your goods, they buy and they sell. Over here they often have stacks of filters for 1-5 euro/piece whatever the type or brand. Even found a set of Rolleinar III for that price once.

@Brian Atherton, That's worth a try. Although there are only a couple of dealers that do S/H stuff that I can get to.

@ David Hughes. Hello, I clicked on the link you gave. I would like their Agfa Ambi silette, but I'm trying to find a couple of camera bags at the minute so I can't afford it. I can't see any filters listed, but I may ask them if I can't find any nearer.

@Spanik. I've no idea what a 'troc' shop is. Are they just general second-hand shops or are they a bit like pawn shops?

I checked out a vented lens hood listed by a New York source (not B&H, with whom I've had very good experiences) that was priced at something like $24. After checking out the shipping to Canada and other add-ons, it came out at something like $56! I eventually sourced it in China and it was priced at less than 20 bucks and the shipping only added a minimal amount more. It's of excellent quality, all metal and well finished. The packaging was well done and delivery was fast. I've almost stopped sourcing anything in the United States, or the UK. (and Christopher Crawford, you're right on the button with your erudite comments)

I suppose there is something constructive about this comment? anything related to the OP subject?

I don't often speak about other countries past, so I expect the same from other countries people.

Really enjoy your post Chris, please respect yourself and don't taint them with this kind of comments that arent constructive at all.

I was wondering if any other brits on the forum have bought stuff from abroad, such as filters etc?

Recently I tried to buy a 46mm yellow hoya filter from B&H. The filter was listed at $16.95 (£13.71), shipping starting from $13.51, and duties and tax $31.01.

I was wondering if I'd really have to pay $31.01 'duties and tax' on an item worth $16.95?

I have found an ebay listing for a yellow filter but the seller doesn't charge 'duties and tax', but in an email they say 'your country will collect tax' etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Quite a few years ago, the US made Optics coming into the US, (meaning all lenses, cameras, and accessories -filters, etc.) Exempt from tarrifs, taxes and customs duties.

Everything. Being in the US, I have benefited greatly from this exemption, for decades.
