Regarding that last picture of the tree, that must have been a tricky exposure scenario. Did you just leave it to the onboard meter or did you have to compensate?

I compensated - but instead of using the compensation dial, I just metered on the trunk and used the AE-Lock to set the exposure at the proper place, then reframed.
