Bruges!

I'm going to Bruges for a few days mid-August, and I'll be taking my EOS-30 and OM-2. I'll be shooting HP5+ and APX100 mostly, with a few rolls of Efke KB25.
If any of you have been to Bruges already, do you have any advice on locations worth visiting/photographing? I would also like to do some street photography, so It'd be useful to know how relaxed people are in Bruges.
Really, any advice whatsoever on travelling to Bruges will be warmly appreciated.

Bruges is such a beautiful place !!!!
I was there more than 5 years ago and i can still remember the awe i was in.
The town itself is very quaint and pretty. My advice is have a map (or not) and wonder around and get lost!!! . Lots of small little boutique chocolate shops with interesting store fronts and from my experience, people are generally very laid back. They will be plenty of tourist around...especially in August.

One thing i enjoyed particularly was 'Quasimodo's bike tours'. I remember they led us out to the countryside. Very picturesque. Cycling along gravel roads lined with big trees next to a canal.

Bring many films!!!

It's a lovely town, very photogenic. There are a few set shots, such as bright red geraniums in windows by canals near bridges etc which everyone photographs but there are plenty of less cliched views. The central square is lovely and busy and there are lots of lovely winding streets, interesting shops and old buildings to add atmosphere. Unfortunately it will be rammed with tourists in August so go for details and close ups if you want to exclude them from your photos or else have some early mornings! There are some lovely bars and restaurants there to enjoy as well.

Just a great place to walk around and enjoy. Be sure and sample the chocolates and have a Palm beer or two while watching the people go by.

Gosh I miss it.

Bruges Triple. Love it. Loved the tour of the brewery.

Lots of good museums and cathedrals and churches.

Too much good food.

Wander and get lost is a good idea.

It's a lovely place, but will be very crowded with tourists. I recommend taking photos from a canal boat ride. Also try to get some photos of lace-making. Have a great trip.

Brugges is a classic town, walking inside the town and seeing it is the attraction.

I was there in January. It's a great town. There is so much to shoot there. Enjoy it. I know I did.

That is great. After seeing In Bruges I've been wanting to go there.

I'd probably bring a lot of Ilford HP5 or FP4 and a few rolls of color.

I took Kodak Tri-X for my M6. I had a 35mm and 50mm lens. For my color stuff I used a Nikon D200 and 2 zoom lenses.
All I can say is enjoy your trip. I have a friend that lives in Pittem, Begium and can't wait to go back for a visit.

Bruges is a lovely museum in itself.

But in summer

It is crammed with tourists.
The Brittons (always a lot) visiting can't hold their beer, quaffing it's called I think.
It is a tourist trap, as in bring your own sandwiches.


If you have the chance visit Bruges in the winter.

Crowds have gone and it can sometimes have a delicate "Tristesse"
Imagine being alone in a rainy street and not knowing if it is 2009 or 1009.

"Bruges la morte".

The city of Ghent is nearby, has a lovely old center and is more alive .

But yes, we are all drunkards 😉. I smoked my first cigarette there on a school trip and had my first kiss on the coach back. No beer though, which I regret now, although the inhabitants probably don't.

If you develop your own black and white, take Tri-x, as it is essentially two or more films in one, as long as you mark it clearly and buy different developers. If I were going, taking 2 films, and shooting only black and white, I would take trix and ilford delta 100.

As you'll be going to Brugge, you should of course sample the "Brugse Zot" instead of Palm! 🙂

And of course don't forget the "fritjes", which are best had from the kiosks specializing on these only.

My recommendations for Ghent also: a very pretty city, and not as touristic as Brugge.
