Buenos Aires through my Leica M3

Certainly no debate from me. I think cloudcuckoo's shots are great, and I enjoyed photographing there myself. On the other side of the coin, I can't for the life of me seem to frame anything interesting around my home...so it's definitely perspective.

On a more somber note, a French photographer was killed early Wednesday morning when he tried to resist a robbery:

I'm not posting this to discourage going to Buenos Aires. I definitely want to return. Just to reinforce being aware of your surroundings, and that it's not worth resisting a robbery.

yes it was a nationwide news, very sad. 'Retiro' area is not the place to show off your camera, specially with that big slum right next to it. He was also unlucky, he fought with the thief but the guy's got a knife so he was stabbed once and it was too close to his heart. Ambulance came after 4 minutes but he was gone already. Police caught him on the runaway.

I'm not cloudcuckoo but I'll respond as I had the chance to visit Cafe Tortoni.
I had trouble taking photos in there as it was dark and I didn't have fast film in my camera nor did I have a tripod with me. If I go there again, I would definitely take some fast film and/or a tripod.

My trip to BA was just before I bought my Leica, however, I was using an FM2N.

You are right about the atmosphere. It definitely has a lot of that.

I went with my college age daughter WHO IS A VEGETARIAN to Argentina a few years ago. Since she knew that Argentina is famous for their beef, she made a conscious decision before the trip to stop being a vegetarian for the time she was in Argentina so she could experience the delicious grass fed beef. She thoroughly enjoyed the beef we had at restaurants and returned to her vegetarian eating habits as soon as she got home. She never got sick or had any digestive problems due to the change in her diet.

I will say, however, that I found the eating habits in Argentina a bit strange.
They serve dinner very late and there were lots of people still eating dinner at 11:00 PM or Midnight, with the restaurant being very crowded at those hours. Where I'm from, everyone is finished eating and has gone home.

Ellen, I'm glad your friend took that chance to try the beef.
There are two reasons why we eat dinner so late, first its our spanish heritage and second its our italian heritage that keeps us talking for ever on the table after dinner.😀
 
I love the third shot. I do these kind of shots, too, and most of them come out boring. But some just work and your does. Seems like a perfect exposure to me. The details on that walls: awesome.
