Good Day Gents (and Ladies)!

I am a recent convert to the Wild and (sometimes) Wacky World of RangeFinders. I have in my possession 2 Yashica Electros - a GS and a recently aquired GT - and 2 Canons (which means I'll have to start hanging around the Canon forum too! :p ).

Having read about the Pad of Death  , I noticed that the GS had a pronounced CLUNK! on the rewind, so I assume that the POD is in need of replacement. The GT is quiet on the rewind, in fact too quiet. I removed the bottom plate and looked at the two "plungers" that move down when you press the shutter release.

The larger of the two has a relief cut around it which I assume is for the shutter latch. If I remember correctly - I read somewhere that this should be adjusted so that the latch lever just locks into the notch - so I made the adjustment. Now when I rewind the GT, it makes an audible click! which seems to be the normal sound.

(Whew!) Now my question. When I switch to the Bulb position neither the GS or the GT will close the shutters when I release the shutter release. The shutters will only close when I move the rewind lever. Is this normal or is it time for more Clean/Adjust? Be gentle! I'm just a New Guy! ;)

Thanks greyhoundman, that hardly hurt at all! :p I quess it's P.O.D. replacements all around! Good thing is I counted the turns and direction of the plunger adjust - I should be able to put it back where it was.

I like it here!

The POD is barely visible if you look around the shutter button, once the top cap has been removed, from the front of the camera. If its one of the old types, the remnants (if exist) should be kind of a black dense rubber foam. If its of the newer types, it would be a translucent yellowish piece of plastic, which AFAIK lasts much longer than the other type. Thickness should be 2mm. If everything is Ok, you shouldn´t need to readjust the plungers position after POD replacement. Check Roger Provins and Yashica Guy pages. They did an excellent job gathering information on how to repair these beautifull cameras.

The clunk on rewind is normal no? My GTN has always had this clunk and still appears to work fine, touch wood.

Thanks for your reply Ernesto, good information. According to the Yashica Guy's site a "CLUNK" indicates a P.O.D. replacement a "click" seems to be normal - but hey chenick, if your getting good pictures !? :p
